Axle seal leak

Post by cantabrian »

This is a question about how much negligence is ok to allow. I'm pretty sure I have an axle seal leak. There's motor oil covering the bottom of the transmission, and my mechanic pointed out that it seems there's a small leak from the axle seal. But it's not a huge leak. I'm not losing very much oil. Hardly any at all. So, I'm wondering: can I let this go for a while? What's the harm? From what I've read, I know it's not a huge job to take the axle out and replace the seal. But there are other jobs I'd like to give higher priority for now.

So it's transmission oil leaking. It is rather rare to hear this, perhaps PO messed trying to remove the axle from the transmission. Can't really measure it how much it's leaking, when the fluid warms up is very fluid and may leak more. Check regularly the fluid level at the dipstick - read carefully the correct dipstick reading procedure on forums.
