P80 "bastards" thermostat access (1999-2000)

Post by abscate »

Don't hate us, but on the 1999-2000, when the PS reservoir moved to the coolant stack, we get this access to our thermostat housing...

Hahaha, no hate!

Where's the hard fuel rail?

And the double clamp?

And you're still using those torx bolts?

I heard the 1999-2000 have these electronic throttle modules that have a near 100% failure rate :)

I never had a problem with my thermostat access, as long as you use a good torx driver, and push down when turning it shouldn't strip.
Once its out, put anti-seize on the bolts and you are good!

I broke an allan key on those torx's when I only just had the volvo.. :) After that I bought a decent set of torx sockets.
Try replacing the temperaturesensor there ;)

It's more than made up for with the banjo bolt under the intake manifold and the ETM that requires removing that same intake manifold.

Although I should report that the third time I had to remove the manifold, I got that bolt off first try.

I've done the thermostat on both S70s 98 and current one 99 and didn't have any issues with it. Both issues I saw were the thermostat leg breaking the spot weld on and staying open (fail safe ;) ) Oh, and if you're in the market for an OEM thermostat, get a Wahler, why? I got an OEM one that one side said Wahler and the other Volvo, similar to Aisin wp and Volvo wp being the same thing.

i replaced my thermostat and coolant temp sensor last month, had no problem removing the thermostat housing. rear torx bolt is hard to get to, but i was able to get it in by going at it from behind the fuel rail, at a slight angle. used plier to pull it out once it was all the way backed out.

certainly had bigger clearance/access issues in that stack than this. *cough power steering pump mounting bolts only accessible through holes on the side of the power steering pulley cough*

XeModex has a video on their website (and on You Tube) about turbo ETM removal without removing the manifold. Easy as fudge.....sort of :D

Removal of temp sender by first removing PS pump
then using a 5/8 inch pipe spanner on the sender unit.

Removal of PS pump through holes in the pulley couldn't be easier with the right socket. I use a 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch converter with a 3/8 inch 12mm socket driven by a 1/4 inch ratchet. It's only 3 bolts.
