Ambient temperature gage

Thanks that clears it up for me, this is a great forum to those who don't know. It seems luketrash has nail it for me, safety would seem to drive Volvo and knowing the temp of the road would be helpful in deed.

My thoughts. This is not a substitution for professional advice.

1. If you relocate the sensor you may change the calibration. The wire resistance may be critical. You probably will not be able to rescale it.

2. As some one else said the sensor is meant to sense the ROAD TEMPERATURE. This happens adequately only when the vehicle is moving.

3. If you wish test the sensor.

a. Place the car in park, pull imergency brake, block wheels.
b. Start engine and place sensor in stirred ice water. You should read about 32 degrees after some delay. The engine software appears to have some limits and delays built in. Monitor over some time.

No problem...you've been offered some good suggestions.
I also would not move it...it's be calibrated for its exact location.
Believe it or not, later model V70's have them in their mirror housing. Just read this on VADIS the other day and was surprised...guess in the later models, the road temp isn't being measured anymore.

Was trying to relocate the sensor, could you point me towards it? Is it under the car bumper? Or do you get at it from the trunk?

Under the front bumper...sticking into the plastic cover that covering the underside of the radiator/intercooler. On my S70 it is on the passenger side....assume it's the same for your car.

In seeking the sensor on my 850 you would need the removal the bottom plastic shield first as it's covering the bottom of my car.

This shield covers the bottom on back for 15 inchs or so.

Would this dash gauge also display road temperature (as opposed to ambient temp) in a 1999 V70? The reason I ask: mine usually reads at least 20

If it's reading 20 higher, I assume it's come loose of the plastic cover (air dam is what many call it) and is hanging closer to the road. It should read pretty spot on, especially if you're traveling at a good pace. The only time I see the temp. go up beyond what I think is reasonable is when I'm sitting in traffic on a very hot day....then it does pick up some highway degrees.

FWIW, my '99 V70 seems to be spot on - moving or not. The only thing I notice is a 2-3

Thanks for the replies. I'll try to locate the thing and see if it's come loose from the cover.
