Hi everyone, just bought my first volvo V70 AWD two days ago and im super excited to get it running.
I bought the car for $480 with no key and a dead battery. While i figure out the key/ignition situation, i have a few questions about the engine.
1.What is this and why would it be disconnected?
2.This wire, coming off the positive termnal, doesn't look factory to me , any ideas?
3.What is this unconnected wire? Looks like it goes into the headlight.
4.This plastic tube is brittle and cracked? Where could i find another one? Is it vital to the running of the vehicle.
Thanks for any advice.
New to me V70, couple questions... Topic is solved

Welcom! That's a lot of red!
1. That's your car alarm. They often sound like sick cows.
2 that is not factory and needs to be removed and thrown away. An unfused wire connected to battery is dangerous
3 that brown connector belongs up in the brown receiver top of screen. I think that's purge valve on your car. You will have some fault codes ( check engine light) because of this
4 air hose to the ECU ( computer) box. Not a biggie
5 lots of red!!

That battery wire could be for the trailer hitch wiring. Just disconnect it for now.
The brown plug is probably for the headlight wiper motor, you will notice another one on the other side of the car.
Not having a key is a problem. I suggest getting a new ignition lock from the dealer, a bit pricey, but it comes with an original key that will fit the door, hatch, and glove compartment. Then get a copy made for a spare. There is no 'chip' in the key, so the dealer parts department should make a copy for less than $20.
You can 'start' the engine if you take the steering column cover off, remove the electrical switch and turn it with a screwdriver. You can not drive it because of the steering wheel lock.

If I had a larger garage, I could have more Volvos.

Or just contact a dealer about cutting a shiny new key to fit the original ignition.Klausc wrote:That battery wire could be for the trailer hitch wiring. Just disconnect it for now.

They should be able to help you if you can provide proof of ownership and a VIN.

Thanks, BE!! I am currently kicking myself in the head (no pain there) for forgetting about the computer generated key cutter. Get 2 cut. I even did that with my 1998, a long time ago.

Hi guys thanks for the responses!
I did get to the ignition, and crank the car with a screwdriver but the battery is dead so im charging it with my durango.
I found a key in the glove box that opens the doors but doesnt turn the ignition? Its a volvo key, maybe they lost the key before and switched the ignition?
The previous owners seem like bad DIYers and i found a few other things i would like to ask you guys.
Are these cut vaccum hoses? And what is this tanks? Looks like coolant reservoirs? Doesent look factory from the pics i've seen Is this important?

Both reservoirs are aftermarket, not sure what they were trying to achieve. Likely you are going to want to get rid of them.
Does the hose on the reservoir near the battery tray, connect to the reservoir back at the firewall? I can't tell. If so, it will introduce unmetered air, not good. If not, where does the hose go to, from each one?

Oh and the hoses near the windshield washer fluid cap - those are vents, supposed to be open.

I think those two tanks are an attempt at a water injection or alcohol injection system of some kind.
Its pretty nasty hackery, indeed.
In picture one upthread, isnt the brown connector open up on the radiator?
If the connector fits, it will be the right one....or it ejects the warp core and a tachyon burst destroys the Universe
