My Cardones are about a year old and started rusting immediately. I was kind of surprised by that.

If you buy them, paint them before installing them.

The painted Cardones ($32 each, see my earlier post) do not rust, I did drive mine in the salt this winter and they are not rusting at all so far.

Huh. I didn't realize those were a thing or I'd have bought them instead. Even now, it might be easier and cost around the same to just buy those and swap them in, rather than painting my own.

Thanks for the tip!

Your plan sounds reasonable, but I guess I wouldn't pay more than $20 each for the used substitutes.

I've gotten tempted by the Ultra premium Cardone front disks. I could swap out the OEM rubber and OEM caliper guides in short order for the reman replacement parts and have a coated OE equivalent caliper for the front. The price is very tempting. Unfortunately I don't see that they have the powder coated calipers available for the rear positions at Rock Auto. I guess I could always paint them or maybe they're available elsewhere.

The unpainted Cardone calipers I put on the front last fall are performing well so far but yeah, insta-rust up here in MA.

Updating this thread.

Parts suppliers are moving targets

In 2017, everyone seemed to be doing ok with Cardone rebuilds, but in 2019, I had a re Cardone caliper completely size up - the pistons wee silver cheese that rusted into the bores 20 months

I’ve gone circle on this, rebuilding an original Volvo caliper with real steel parts is far superior to some crappy aftermarket stuff at a cheap price.

In various threads we have identified pistons and caliper slide pins as inferior quality in the under $50 calipers.

Yeah I bought the rebuilt centric units from RockAuto because that was what fcp was selling new. I also didn't realize they weren't coated and they instantly rusted. It's been about a month but they're working well.
