There is a car on CL nearby, 05 XC70 with 135k. The ad says:
"Tranmission is shifting erratic and harsh. When the car is cold it works perfect. After 5 miles or so it's starts acting up. Not drivable long distances. I'm trying to buy a bigger car so I don't want to mess with it.
- update. Got transmission flushed and it is shifting better..."
Before I call them and maybe look at it, would appreciate any opinions on this, are there known trans issues on an 05?
It's priced to sell but still, the car will have to be really nice to lure me in, in general I am not very interested in AWD. Don't need it here, and it just adds weight and bulk. And inaccessible fuel pumps. I have been driving P80 cars since forever, any other tips on P2 are welcome.

I don't buy the 'shifts better now' thing. The owner got the car with issues and now it's getting rid of it. The AWD is also problematic for that year.
I'd look rather for a 2005+ S60 or V70 with the 2.4t or 2.5t engine. Even the 2.4 non turbo is decent and gets better mpg.

If it's nice in and out, you can swap a trans pretty cheap, worst case.
The P2s will suck you in, though.its a really nice upscale ride from a P80.

This sounds like my car! It isn't actually my car but I'm having the same issues. 2006 xc70 140k on the clock. I got it from a friend on the cheap knowing it had issues. Interior and exterior in great shape for the age. Previous owner had it dealer serviced up until the trans started giving her issues. She took it to a indy Volvo shop and was told needs a new tranny, just drive it till it dies. She was just going to trade it in but i took a chance and bought it. I'm now trying to figure out if it can be fixed with a valve body and new solenoids, new tranny or sell the car?

Hmmmmmm. I'm not seeing good reasons to get into an 05 AWD with a troublesome trans. Will keep my eyes open for that 07 T5. Thanks all for the replies.

I think the n/a pulls decently being a 5 cylinder. Even at highway speeds, it still has some torque remaining. Where the 2.4 n/a lacks presence is with 3-4 adults in the car. No doubt, once you get the low pressure turbo one you won't go back to the n/a. And the high pressure T5 is just another car once it rolls

Unless the fluid is burned a new or rebuilt valvebody should fix this
