850 GLT Exterior Upper Trim Molding

Post by v850 »

I've been searching around for this molding and am having trouble finding it. I found a website that carries exterior molding but they didn't have this one listed or identified in the pictures. Over the past 11 or 12 years that we've had the car, it's worn out, and you can see the metal it covers.

Is this something that can be replaced easily and/or without spending too much money?

Here are two pictures of the driver side, but I would need it for both the driver and passenger sides:

This eventually happens to all of the 850's. I too had this issue and tried many repairs. Would have bought replacements but they were like $140 for each side and that was several years ago. I ended up taking them off (you start at the back and snap them off of the retainers carefully not to bend the aluminum). Then I sand blasted all of the black off, sanded, primed and spray painted them with a mat high temperature duplicoat spray I got at the auto parts store. They looked great years later when we sold the car.

Not a bad idea, it's a bit of work, but could work very well. I'm going to check with the stealership in case they somehow have them cheap or something, but otherwise I'll probably end up leaving it as is, because sand blasting it doesn't sound like too much fun. Sanding, priming, spray painting, etc. isn't too hard or big of a deal because most of it is just prepping the area around it to not get the paint in other places.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.

You can do the whole deal in an hour if you don't need a concours job but just very acceptable.
Just strip the old rubber off with a blade, scuff, mask and spray bomb. It will look much better than what you probably have now

I have seen an 850 that had the black plastic scraped off and black electrical tape applied to the aluminum. It looked OK and if you didn't know about it you would have not noticed anything different.

I did the tape before painting...it looked great but within a few months it started coming off.
