I am going to change transmission fluid for my 2004 s80 Volvo, the manual page says the transmission fluid is Dexron III G, however, my friend told me that Walmart supertech ATF is a good replacement, I am not sure if I can use it. according to spec, it is a replacement for Dexron III,
Super Tech Multi-Vehicle Low-Viscosity ATF is specially formulated with a unique combination of conventional synthetic base stocks and an advanced additive technology to ensure peak performance of almost any automatic transmission. The benefits of using Super Tech Multi-Vehicle LV ATF are providing protection against wear and transmission shudder, resistance to thickening due to high temperatures and maintains frictional stability to maintain smooth consistent shift performance. Always consult owner's manual to ensure you are utilizing the correct transmission fluid for your vehicle.
anybody has advice? thank you.
Can I use the Walmart Supertech ATF on my 2004 volvo S80?

I did worked fine. It`s kind of hard to find straight Dex 3. Even the name brands like Valvoline are Mercon and Dex3 compatible

If you find like I did with my 2004 S80 T6 when I had the conventional Dextron III caused harsh shifting it cost $250 at Volvo Service to flush it with the synthetic version which was the factory fill according to my dealer for 2004 transmission. I bought the wall mart Dextron III in the blue bottles for my first change. My sister's 2005 S80 T6 transmission didn't make it but a few miles from the shop which installed a multi vehicle fluid in a perfect transmission so be leary of that. It has now been 20k since Volvo flushed the Wall Mart Dextron III out which spent no more than 300 miles in and my transmission is just fine like always. June

So do you mean it is fine to use Dexron VI for transmission fluid change, right? thank you.June wrote: ↑02 Apr 2017, 19:19 If you find like I did with my 2004 S80 T6 when I had the conventional Dextron III caused harsh shifting it cost $250 at Volvo Service to flush it with the synthetic version which was the factory fill according to my dealer for 2004 transmission. Do we know why your sisters transmission failed? If it were splines or bearings a fluid change wouldn`t damage those items. Clutch packs or solenoids can have issues when changing to ANY new fluid after many miles without a change,
Do not use Dexron IV. The Volvo fluid is a Dex 3 fancy and expensive synthetic. If you want to use it fine. Just remember the transmission failures in the S80 happen typically with the Volvo fluid in them since Volvo says it is lifetime. Sometimes a fluid change can clear an issue sometimes it makes things worse.

No absolutely not! Companies like Mobil make a Mobil One synthetic version of Dextron III mercon for Dextron III transmissions. Definitely not for use in Dextron IV mercon V transmissions. I have read Trick Shift makes one as well as Amsoil for Dextron III mercon transmissions. Volvo just list a part number followed by synthetic atf on my bill. The mechanic did say it was correct replacement for the "forever fill" from the factory. June

Jennifer used a indy mechanic who put a multi vehicle conventional atf with filter replacement. She requested Dextron III be used, I actually heard her and heard him say he would get it delivered with the filter. The transmission slipped burning the clutches up by the time the car made it home. The T6 engine is so powerful the slipping was not noticed until it was too late which was just a few miles. The higher gears died first. I pulled the stick out and checked the level and right away the smell reminded me of the smell of type F my 1978 Mercury used. I have a strong sense of smell and tend to associate things to smell. He upon questioning said he used multiple vehicle atf.ThommyKent wrote: ↑02 Apr 2017, 23:37 Do we know why your sisters transmission failed? To prove a point I allowed him to put a filter kit and I brought the Wall Mart Dextron III atf. It is hard to find fluid labeled Dextron III. I watched him like a hawk and was quite pleased with how clean the pan was after 12 years and 114k. The transmission shifted harshly so I drove her straight to my dealer I use to flush it with the synthetic Volvo forever fluid which put things back to normal. I do think I will change it every 30k for now on. June

If your S80 is a T6 then your transmission is a GM 4T65E type trans and requires GM type Dexron III. Walmart's Supertech is a dexron III fluid so it will work. Posts requarding synthetic "forever fill" ATF are just getting the synthetic version of Dexron VI. Vehicles that require Dexron VI should not use Dexron III. When your car was produced, Dexron VI(introduced in 2005) did not exist so posts about it requiring Dex VI is complete bull.s80volvo2004 wrote: ↑02 Apr 2017, 15:10 I am going to change transmission fluid for my 2004 S80 Volvo, the manual page says the transmission fluid is Dexron III G, however, my friend told me that Walmart supertech ATF is a good replacement, I am not sure if I can use it. according to spec, it is a replacement for Dexron III,

If your S80 is a non turbo then you would have an Aisin type trans which required Mobil ATF 3309.
Check with your dealership and provide a VIN number for the best answer.

You are wrong my car actually has a 4t65gt GT for gear tronic and the 2.9 non turbo also has a 4t65. Xxx not the "Asian transmission " the GM transmission is what made me switch from the 70 series to begin with back then. Volvo is who claims the factory fill is a synthetic "forever fluid " never needing service not me. Synthetic Dextron III fluid is readily for sale in Mobil 1 bottles not appropriate for Dextron VI transmissions. The super tech conventional fluid did cause my 114k transmission to shift harshly which went away when Volvo put the synthetic fluid back. I simply was letting the original poster know if his transmission suddenly shifts harshly after changing to the Super tech like mine then the dealer can put the factory type fluid back and the transmission will shift normally again.
