Oil filter is doing its job.... FULL of sludge

Changed the oil today. 5K miles on the Mobil1 and 165K on the car. This oil change was all highway. Never seen this before....
Thoughts?

That is really, really nasty Dave. Run you next oil for 1000 miles, then try some Bells de sludge rand change oil and filter again.

You have normal oil changes before, then this?? Very odd if that's the case.

That sludge level is high enough to clog gallerys and kill the oil pump too.

Never in my life have I seen a filter with that much sludge in it. No disrespect, but I can't believe it's been changed 5,000 miles ago with Mobil 1. It looks like the filter hasn't been changed in 165k miles. Are you a new owner to the car? I change my filter and oil (Mobil 1 5w30) every 7,500 miles and it comes out looking really clean. I agree with abscate that you should de-sludge the inside of your engine. Frankly, I wouldn't drive 1,000 miles before doing a flush.

Did the car run on mineral oil before? Any 'engine oil treatments' such as Seafoam?

I'm religious about oil changes. There are some things I willing to go cheap on but oil is never one of them.
I've been racking my brain since last night and the only change I made is a new oil cap. I bought the car with 135K. It was sitting under a tree for about a year and a half but I've been driving the piss out of it since buying it Oct 2015. I was going to drive it this week (about 500 miles) then change, but I'll add the Bell's stuff. I'm sure it's on the shelf at oreilley?

I live in a desert climate and there have been a good number of dust storms lately, but you wouldn't think that much crap got in there...

Oh and if there has been anything in the crankcase besides full synthetic, it wasn't from me. No additives or anything. Just oil and a filter every time

I think dust storm is the most likely explanation. You just can't sludge an engine with carbon that fast. The sludge looks soft too, not like burned carbon.

I think I would treat that 3-4 times. You add it COLD, idle for 10, then dump oil - but read the instructions of course.

I agree with abscate that dust storm debris is the most likely cause. I was going to ask earlier if someone poured dirt or sand into your valve cover.

The oil cap you replaced, is it OEM? How's the rubber seal? It appears that it may be allowing dust in, or that it was letting dust in before you replaced it. I'm assuming you didn't see sludge on the oil/filter change prior to this one so the question may be, did your new oil cap fix a problem, or create the current problem.
