850 Trunk light won't work.

So the wiring to the latch seems OK. Check for 12V as described, if it's not there then probably the microswitch is the problem. You could try cleaning the switch (not sure how to do that, you'd have to get in there and look at it) or get another latch.

Just looked over he diagram. You should see 12 volts on the red wire, Pin 1, at the light.
The Blue/Brown wire at pin 2 gets a ground from the latch when the trunk is open.

My bad on the switch question - Sorry for the inadvertent misdirect...

I'm used to three position switches that give you "On-Off-Auto" operation.
The roller switch on the light is only there to defeat the light if you
don't want it to come on automatically when you open the trunk.

I will check the red wire at the light. Then I guess I will move to the latch. I assume that if I remove it, there should be some wires connected to it somewhere? I'll go from there. Problem is I won't be able to get to it for a couple of days because he is driving it to school.

Finally fixed! Had to replace the trunk latch assembly because it quit working. With the new latch in from a junk yard, the trunk light started working again. Also seems to have helped the remote fob to start work properly again too. Previously had problems with the unlock button on the fob unlocking the drivers door, but now it seems to work!

It only took so long because my son was had the car at college. We were able to work on it during Christmas break. I should have replaced the latch mechanism sooner in my quest to fix the trunk light. I thought there was probably some type of switch in it for the trunk light but didn't get any confirmation on that from the forum until later.

The micro switch is very robust, but the the plastic tang that activates it breaks off deep inside the latch.

I don't write this often, but imho, the plastic tang is not repairable. It's deeply inside a broached sealed, steel sub assembly.

Luckily the forum pointed you to the latch almost right away, it's worth checking the forum soon. I agree with abscate, for most latch issues it is a swap job not a fix job.
