Bought this 05 S80 with ECM-9200 error. Topic is solved

Hi - looking for some expert advice here.

I found a 2005 S80 T6 Turbo, 2.9L - 6 cylinder, 4 dr., 143131 miles, for sale by 2nd owner. It started running rough and losing power on the freeway so he parked it. It has the following error codes, on official volvo dealer stationary:
ECM-9200 Throttle position TP sensor - faulty signal. DTC is found active
ECM-9220 Throttle unit, potentiometer 2 - faulty signal. DTC is found active
(I can't find these error codes online in any list though)

Repairs needed according to owner:
Electronic throttle actuator
Control arm bushing
Left upper Strut mounts

I've done a tranny swap and head gasket job on my 850 so I think I can handle the mechanical side. My #1 concern is the black art of ECM related issues. Is it likely that a replacement ETA will plug and play solve the problem, or is it more complicated and possibly expensive. Could it be a more expensive problem like a dying computer, or some bad connectors hidden somewhere? He's asking $1500 for the car (otherwise in really nice condition) and I have another grand I can put into parts.

The seller seems honest about the repairs needed. Keep in mind this car will need other repairs at these miles. Don't know about the throttle on the 2.9 engine, if they use the older model it may be a $1k+ repair + programming. Also, it looks like the car has the problematic GM transmission, give it a really good check fully warmed.

Thanks oragex. I bought it after a test drive. I'll have to change that throttle controller out though, it keeps throwing the engine into limp mode. When it's not in limp mode the car appears flawless.

Drives me crazy when I see this regurgitated BS on here. The GM 4T65E-GT has been around for decades and is a very good transmission. It's super cheap to fix even if it has problems. The internet has skewed peoples view of this transmission because they only hear about the people that have problems, not the thousands of people that don't have any problems, like me. If it's shifting fine then leave it alone, if the fluid is brown do an fluid transfer and use Dex III.

Secondly, the ETC codes are your biggest worry. Most dealers wont install parts not purchased from them so like oragex said, be prepared to shell out a few grand for that repair. You can rebuild the ETC yourself if you are good with mechanics, they sell an upgrade for it.

Limp mode is just a protection mode it goes into to protect the system. Have your timing belt inspected too.

Tranny is happy so far. Shifts smoothly, holds 2000rpm at 61mph uphill. Fluid reddish brown. I plan on replacing it with fresh mobile DexIII soon - no flush, just drain and replace. Maybe install a new tranny filter since its at 144k.

So if I get a new part and install it, does the dealer have to reprogram something on the car??

The throttle will be a Bosch unit. The problematic throttle ceased production by start of 2003 on non turbos and 2002 in turbos.


No programming required for the Bosch throttle , however the connector pins for the throttle are known to cause problems. Before replacing the throttle check 2 items:

1) Tightness of connecting pins on the connector to throttle
2) Purchase an ECM removal tool (IPD or eBay) and clean the ECM contacts with contact cleaner before spending hundreds on a new throttle

I replaced the old throttle body module with a bosch oem unit on amazon for under $300. First test drive 40 minutes with no error messages or check engine light. So far so good...




Update: drove the car on a few trips according to the emissions computer reset instructions, took it in and passed emissions. Have driven a few hundred miles since and everything is perfect.

Getting 31.5 mpg on freeway at 60mph! Headsnapping 0-60. Luxury inside. I'm loving this car! Thanks all for the help.
