2 Topics, one a question the other information.
Question first: I want to change the oil myself and don't seem to have the correct size drain plug ratchet, it seems to be a square head ratchet of maybe 8mm, which I don't have. The drain plug part number is 1218114 that the ratchet is required for. Can anyone confirm the ratchet size required.
Possibly already know this but the full VADIS Volvo software suite is available to buy online at http://www.electronicmanuals.co.uk (I'm not working for them). I find it very useful for getting part numbers and advice on potential repairs and overhauls.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
The drain plug should not be a square headed unit (picture in VADIS) and it will certainly be bigger than 8mm. If you do have a square head in there someone has used the wrong plug.
The VADIS discs can also be bought on eBayUK for slightly less than that.
Bill.

Thanks for the reply, appreciate it. Can't be sure if its an 8mm, I'm only guessing but I'm pretty sure its a standard plug as it has a volvo service history. Having rang the dealer the only information they provide is that it should be a 3/8" bit but when I go to buy one the 3/8" seems to have loads of different mm size options. Therefore, is it a square or 5 sided etc. type of ratchet if its to fit a volov plug? I owened an Alfa and Lancia previously so only have a couple of ratchet bit non of which fit.

I have owned several Volvos and none of them had a square sump plug, always 5 sided. Usually the 'square' plugs have a hole recessed into the plug and the tool fits into it, not around it.
The 3/8" is the size of the square drive on a socket set. They come in 1/4"; 3/8"; 1/2"; 3/4" and 1". The bigger the squared end on the ratchet the heavier duty they are intended for. The sockets themselves come in inch and millimetre sizes. That is the measurement across the open end of the socket and that is the measurement you require. Unfortunately, my books do not give the size for that one.
