I'm back.. another new Volvo

Hey everyone its been a while! almost 3 years! well i went and got me another Volvo this time a 2000 V70R its been sitting for almost 8 years but is in great shape only has 119k. replaced the shot fuel pump and it fired right up, now comes the fun part of finding her flaws and getting her back into tip top shape. how has everyone been? any other R owners around the portland area?

Welcome back. You may want to take a look at scot850s posts. Neil has done some very comprehensive repairs on his 2000 V70R including rear suspension rebuild and corrosion protection (he's from a Canada so he has to deal with salt on the roads)

Great job in finding a low mileage example as these are getting rare on the ground.

I wish you the best of luck! Feel free to contact me if you need help. I have virtually replaced most of the car and it has been an endless PITA. Currently it has a misfire and brakes with no feeling. I am sending it in disgrace to the dealer next week for a brake flush ( calipers, flexi hoses, rotors and pads and parking brakes and cables all replaced).

Hardest parts to find are rear end parts as many are now obsolete and the rear vented brakes are a 1 year 'R' only part and now all parts including rotors and calipers are no longer available. Volvo did offer a replacement option using newer model parts, but most dealers don't know about it anymore.

Once the car is up and running again, I am finally planning to sell it as I am tired of repairing it constantly. I have spent in the region of $25,000 in parts and repairs, and much of the work was done by myself. The number of hours spent is huge. I have driven a whole 5000 miles in 4.5 years of owning it and had planned to keep it forever, but now life has changed so looking to get something bigger.

Ouch!

That's $5 per mile, sheesh. I wonder if you've just gotten extremely unlucky with that particular car, Neil. If not, I'm never buying a V70, though it is the car of my dreams.

I have had several XC's all with low to high miles and they were all fantastic, just fuel pumps haha, right now i think i have to really flush the oil system i suspect that the VVT isn't resetting when i turn it off as sometimes when i go to restart it acts like it has a broken timing belt, no resistance or compression, let it sit for little and it fires right up perfect. I expected when buying it to spend 2-3k to bring her back to her 100% Glory. Right now all the interior is removed either at the detail shop or garage being cleaned and restored. I'm sure i will have my moments where i want to sell it but once its on the road and i am leaving subaru owners in awe of how a volvo wagon just kicked their butt i will remember why i did all this work.

$2-3000 is what I I normally expect to bring one of these cars back up to stage zero including any inherited problems (C/V boots, PCV, timing belt) but with the 'R' a lot of the issues were due to the PO who worked for a VW repair shop and had repairs done there and he did some himself. I turns out he was incompetent and used crappy aftermarket seals and the like. I had only bought it as he had supposedly done the rear main and front crank seals and cam seals. After a short time they all started leaking again as well as he had not done the PCV system he had claimed to have done properly. Probably the reason the seals went in the first place. After owning the car for a short time I also started finding all the broken interior parts and panels.

The rear sub-frame rotted out due to a reaction between the aluminum and the main frame steel and mounting bolts due to all the salt used up here. Re-building the rear with new fuel pumps and suspension bushes etc cost me in the region of $6500 in parts and powder coating.

One these cars parts can add up really quickly!

Neil with regard to brakes with no feeling I would venture to ask if the fronts are getting warm enough as if you're running larger than standard rotors, a hard pad compound and drive without enthusiasm you're likely to never have them heat up enough to gain some feel.

Or perhaps only one of the latter.......

Pad material is usually the stand-out culprit for causing lack of feel (and increased stopping distances) When I owned the 1998 V70R with the new larger rotors ( I think they were 305mm) they were warped by being overheated (discs were blue) and had Bendix metal pads. I think it was my own hard driving without running them in as they had been fitted while the cylinder head was off the car by the PO.

As soon as I went to a softer pad and new discs the brakes felt like they had some power.

Hi Mike, you are correct to a certain extent. The PO fitted what I believe were Akebono pads at the front. Love the lack of dust but they do need to warm up to bite. That I am ok with, but since I rebuilt the rear end and fitted all new rear brake hoses/pads/calipers/parking brakes/rotors and metal brake pipes the brakes have no feel and the pedal feels weird. The brakes are due a flush anyway so no harm with that and maybe they can get out some possible trapped air. At that point at least I know I have done what I can for them!

Well to make you feel better, The R dropped a valve today when i was starting it to flush and change all the oil...... i am scared to see what this will cost me, tho Robert who owns ARD tuning is only 20 mins away I will probably tow it to him and have him do a valve job... guess it will get everything else done whiles its there...
