2000 V70 base RH driveshaft carrier bearing 9181693

Post by scot850 »

Naturally, any car I own has to have an issue that is difficult to repair as I can't find a how to or even the carrier bearing needed to complete the repair. FCP has a carrier bearing for up to a 98 but can't find anything listed beyond that. Vida doesn't show the part separately either so no part number there.

To replace it do you have to pull the inner CV boot and remove all the bearings to access the carrier bearing, or can it be pulled off towards the transmission end? I'm not convinced that is possible as the shaft welds look too high for the bearing to slide over them.

The only other issue is the outer CV boot has split and as it is a Volvo axle I'd rather keep it than fit a re-manufactured item.
RH axle complete
RH axle complete
RH axle carrier bearing
RH axle carrier bearing
RH axle outer CV boot split
RH axle outer CV boot split
RH axle outer CV boot split (2)
RH axle outer CV boot split (2)
I know how to pull the outer CV joint to replace the inner and outer CV boots, but if you have to remove the inner boot how does the axle dis-assemble to allow access to the carrier bearing?

Thanks,

Neil.

Contacted Marty at Raxles and they no longer repair/refurbish this version at least as they have no parts for them. I have spoken to the dealer foreman to see if they can repair it so he is looking into it for me. Also contacted Colorado DS and a used parts specialist I use to see what options I may have. What a pain! Really don't want to use a FEQ or the likes if I don't have to.

Go to youtube and search "axle support bearing", you will see some videos using dremel (or angle grinder) to cut the old bearing out.
Installing new bearing (make sure you get quality bearing) is easier, just slide it down, tap equally on all sides (tap ONLY on the INNER race part) bit by bit.

The bearing PN should be right on the bearing itself.

Thanks for the thread info and Youtube link. The Toyota axle looks almost identical. Only part I am not sure on is the fact that the bearing slides to the inner end of the axle at the transmission end as there is a welded seam just inward of the bearing and it looks thicker than the bearing I/D.

The bearing is super expensive (approx. $150 + US or about $200 +CDN). I looked into the Febest brand listed but everywhere lists it as un-available. Did find another brand in the UK for about 16 pounds. May look at picking one up when I go over in a few weeks!

If the OE bearing is all that is available, it may be cheaper to buy a good used Volvo OE axle from a specialist if they have one, or I may just have to take a chance on a FEQ one!

Go to ebay and search "45x75x19 Bearing", you will see one from Turkey for $12:

Would also suggest contacting SKF. They don't always advertise everything that they make/carry.

I used the link that cn90 gave and ordered one of the bearings out of curiosity. The bearing is used by Ford on the Transit and Fiesta from the info on the manufacturers website and used as a carrier bearing. The manufacturer is Dutch and have a good name.

I had thought at $12US with free international shipping you can't go too far wrong and hopefully it may prove a resource for others in the future.

I tried ordering one from the link I added from the UK. Part was 12 pounds (no 20% tax to pay) but I was staggered when they added 104 pounds ($130US for shipping to Canada! And to think I used to think that shipping from the US was (and is) ridiculous! I may pick one up in the UK when over there in a few weeks. Hopefully by then the ones from Turkey may have arrived and I can see what sort of quality they have or if they are rip-off copy parts.

The SKF info is somewhere for the 98 and older bearing so I may try to contact SKF to see if they can supply them and at what cost.

Thanks for the help guys.

Gopher Bearing in St. Paul, MN has a 45 x 75 x 16mm bearing. They quoted me ~ $45.00. They don't typically supply automotive bearings but they do tend to carry a good variety and can match by dimensions. You probably could use a 16 mm wide instead of the 19 oem. For others in the s.w. Gopher also has a branch in Texas.

That is good to know for the future. I am currently hoping my usual used parts Volvo specialist on Vancouver Island (Chapman Motors Inc.) have a good axle for me. We had a fortunate conversation today as I had told them I had a 5-speed auto and they heard 5 speed (stick). I was surprised when they said they had none! Now we are on the same boat hopefully they will find a good one for me tomorrow for shipping to me!

I plan to try and replace the bearing on the current axle when the bearings turn up if they look ok and then do a how-to for others here. If the axle turns out ok, then either keep it as a spare or sell it on.

Thanks for the help.
