Thumping from front of vehicle

Post by Flip07 »

As I am driving straight down the road, the car rides fine. As soon as I am decelerating and/or turning right, I get a thumping sound from what appears to be in the right tire well area. Significant enough to send the vibrations through the car. When I accelerate and/or turn left it goes away. Not sure if related but I feel the vibrations through the steering wheel, but it does not seem to be from the steering column. I had the car alignment adjusted, and it seemed to make it smoother, but the thumping came back over time possibly masking the issue. The brakes and rotors have been replaced. Not sure if related but the steering wheel is not centered when driving straight, it is angle at about 30 deg left side down. I have a video I'll post on youtube shortly to see if viewing helps the troubleshooting. Please help. the language barrier with the mechanics while I am deployed overseas makes trouble shooting harder, and I really need to go to the shop and tell them exactly what I need done.

Thanks,
Flip

Here is the video of the thumping sound. You can see the steering wheel is not level when driving straight, it's at the 2 and 8 o'clock position but I don't think that is related. As I go into the right hand turn the sound begins.

I would consider alignment... for the steering wheel not being centered. Alignment is usually under $100. When on lift they too may notice something else going on.

I had the car aligned, and the thumping reduced a lot but did not go away. However, it was only about a week before the sounds of the thumping completely returned to the point of being annoying. Not to mention, bad for the car to have something pounding like that. After doing some reading, I don't think the steering wheel adjustment would have any connection to the problem. I thought the Tie Rods may have a slight amount of play at the mounting points, but that is my only guess.

Highly suggestive of failure in a CV axle joint. Noise appears under strain of acceleration straight or turning.
