2000 V70 FWD base RH axle seal help needed

Post by scot850 »

As part of the repair for the RH axle on project V70, I have the new axle seal and discovered it is completely different to any others I have done on a P80. How do you remove this? Can I use my Lisle seal puller that I used on the camshaft and crank shaft seal on the last 850 project? The seal looks a whole lot bigger and I'm not sure the tool will be man enough for the job.

Naturally also discovered the axle has another hidden 'O' ring seal inside the axle hole in the trans:

Will have to now order the 'O' ring seal. Bugger!

Has no one replace the oil seal on a 5 speed auto that can answer this question please?

Thanks,

Get a pick and gently pull that O ring, measure it up, in case it's NLA.

That seal shouldn't be bad to pull, nicely bathed in oil and/or ATF

I'm hoping it comes out easily. Wondering more now how to get the new one back in as the center section stands proud of the center hole in the seal so the tools I have will bottom out on that. May have to talk to the dealer to find out how they do it and borrow a tool if I can.

Parts are ok. I have the bigger seal and the 'O' ring is on order.

Appreciate the help!

OK the seal will not be as easy to remove as I thought. The seal has a metal reinforcing ring on the majority of the inside of the seal. I tried to use my Lisle tool, but due to the depth and stiffness of the seal added to the usual Volvo idiocy of putting the power steering hard metal line directly under it, this tool will not work.

Volvo would appear to use a kind of large stud extractor tool that screws in between the center shaft and the seal and then they use a bracket over the whole thing to then pull it back out. Maybe it is time to accept defeat. The oil on the seal did not appear to come from the seal, but from above it and run down onto it. I am thinking the oil may have been a leaking cam seal at some point that was never cleaned up. The oil is dry and crusty (a little like myself!!).

The axle itself is inside the shaft and it fits inside it using a large 'O' ring to seal it. I will replace that at least.

Spoke to the dealer foreman today. He says they have a tool for it but most mechanics use a drill, some metal screws and a pull hammer as the tool takes too long. He said to bring the new seal and swing by and they can explain it to me.

I don't replace seals that aren't leaking and as axle seals seem to last forever in all my vehicles I haven't replaced one yet. My 2000 V70 FWD completed 355K kilometres without any leaks whatsoever.

Noticed that that early 5 speed has all the holes for addition of an angle gear; I thought this was the case (pardon the pun!!)

I am tempted to clean it all up and just fit a new 'O' ring seal in the center shaft/sleeve as that is easy and leave the other one well alone. I am not convinced the main seal was leaking and the leak looks like it may have been above the shaft seal area at some point. Most of the stuff was baked hard so not recent.

I will usually replace a seal while I am in there to save re-doing the job again, but maybe, just maybe I will take a chance this time.

Thanks for the input Mike.
