1991 940 Turbo wagon fuel pump relay access

Post by Bobshell »

My 1991 940 Turbo wagon, automatic, has been refusing to start on really hot days. All the Volvo experts I know say it's most likely the fuel pump relay. I ordered a new relay and got it yesterday.

I can see the relays behind the assembly with all the fuses on it, but even after I unhook the clips on both sides I can only move that assembly about an inch or so. I'm worried about using too much force and damaging something.

It looks like if I removed the module with the cigarette lighter from the center console I'd have free access to the relays, but I can't figure out how it comes out.

Help! How do I get to the relay to replace it?

Thanks!!!

Bob

With regards to accessing the relay, you need to unclip the retainers on either one or both sides of the fuse block, then pull it out. Removing the cig. lighter assembly will provide you more room, as a last resort.

I do suggest, however, reading my posts on fuel pumps, especially if you have the twin fuel pump system with in-tank pump on the fuel pick up and the main pump under the car below the driver's seat. I suggest carrying a blunt object and tapping the fuel pump under the car lightly, a few times, when the car refuses to start, to see if it makes a difference. Then do as I say in my posts to remedy the situation, if tapping the pump makes the car start.

FYI - my 740 still have the original, factory date coded fuel pump relay that works just fine after 21 years and 228,000 miles.

Let us know what you do, what you find, or if you have any questions or comments.
