I picked up a cable to scan my car for codes and use VOL-FCR. I have a 1998 V70 AWD.
I have both FCR 1.3.6 and FCR 1.7.6 installed on a Windows XP laptop. Both programs load up and work properly but when I go to connect to the OBD using the cable the programs I get an error.

The cable I have: http://www.ebay.com/itm/KKL-port-RS232- ... rmvSB=true

Any thoughts to what I could be missing?

Is your cable set to com 1?
Vol fcr only works on 1.
I have a vag com usb cable. And it works great with the program.
As long as the driver is installed correctly and set to com1.

I have no experience with the cable you're using, I ordered a $12 Vol-FCR cable 4 years ago from eBay and it has been perfect since. COM1 and Win95-10 have all worked for me. I suppose I could crack it open and see what chipset it is.

Did you have to load a driver for the cable or did it just work?

I'll go back and make sure the serial port is set to com1.

I haven't had to bother with a driver in windows 95, 98, 2000, XP or 7/10.

Just install the software, connect the cable and set it to COM1 port.No drivers needed for cable.
Key must be in pos II,in order to make comms with vol-fcr.
You installed drivers for wrong cable btw.For serial cable, drivers are not needed. You use drivers for virtual COM1 port.
Remove it and try again.

So I figured the problem out. When I reinstalled the center console, I forgot to plug the port back in. I try not to make dumb mistakes like that.

That'll do it! I've made that mistake before, too.
