For a limited time in 1996 only, Volvo offered a new heavy duty manual transmission designed specifically for the 850 R (excluding US market), called the M59, which featured a viscous coupling limited slip differential. Furthermore, the M59 equipped cars were fitted with the B5234T4 2.3-litre 5-cylinder engine featuring a larger TD04HL-16T turbo, re-designed turbo manifold & intercooler, unique ecu with Motronic 4.4, uprated fuel pressure sensor and a heavy duty clutch.

Before you go that far; how are your torque strap and buckle mounts? (the one at the top Left rear of the motor, and the one under the front left of the car?) I know these cars use cable shifting but? worth a look.

Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

I had this problem in 3rd gear on my S70. Only happened decelerating downhill. Occurred soon after I bought the car for a couple months and hasn't happened for a long time now. I attributed it to not being driven for a while. Not sure how similar the 98 S70 T5 and 96 850R transmissions are to each other (I'm assuming pretty similar), but I know if the shifter bushings wear out it can lead to problems with shifting and a sloppy shifter.

The shift cable bushings are changed and they cannot cause the issue.
