Does anyone have any comments on the slow rotation when I try to start it? I tried with two different batteries and got the same slow turnover.

Junior is not here right now to answer questions, but my understanding is that car quit and then overheated. I concluded that it overheated because of a low/dead battery that was unable to operate the fan. I could be totally full of crap on this reasoning.

Thanks.

Not so fast....the rad. fan could have quit due to a faulty bullet connector or fan relay...not a low battery.

Wellll, I don't know if this is the simple stuff. I finally got back to this vehicle after fixing two others. Pulled the timing belt cover to discover the water pump frozen and the belt off the pulleys. Any and all advice is welcome at this time. What do I have to look for? How do I check for damage to the valves/pistons? What is the best way to fix this? Or is it junk?

(Note that I have done several timing belt replacements on S70s so don't need too much direction there.)

Thanks!

Another question. Assuming that I go ahead and repair this, what brand/source should I be looking at for a new water pump and timing belt?

Thanks.

I think there is a water pump brand thread discussion in the Parts forum. Aisin or HePu are the brands frequently discussed here.

Install a new pump, belt kit and give it a try. Make sure to time it correctly by using a cam locking tool. Don't rely on cam marks only (ask me why). I was advancing mine 15-20 times because the cam gears were dialed in such way that even though I was spot on, in reality I wasn't.

Ok. I will go ahead with a new pump and belt kit. It may take me several days to get parts and get the job done. I will report back here with the results.

Thanks.

On reflection, a used pump and timing belt would be useful to evaluate if the valve train is trashed so that you could make a cost free diagnosis rather than have to buy new parts, especially if bent valves mean end of life.

Does anyone have old parts from a tB and water pump job?

The failed pump is from NAPA. They have a lifetime guarantee. So, I can get a new pump that way and probably have a used belt I can use to test things out. I don't intend to use the Napa pump long term because this is the third Napa pump failure I've had in the last 2 years. I'm still pretty busy with other stuff so might not get back to this car for a few days. But I will report back with results when I get farther along.

Thanks.

Hello again after all these months. I let the car sit for the last 6 months and finally got back to working on it. I replaced the water pump and timing belt. The car starts and runs now. I have not driven it yet. Just idled it in the garage and revved it up a little bit. All of that seems fine. BUT, there is a lot of "lifter" type noise. Could this be bent valves? Could it be an artifact of having sat for 6 months? How can I figure out what is going on.

Thanks.
