I don't pretend to understand the psychology of women, but here's your plan:
- give wife the "puppy dog eyes" look as you tell her that you appreciate her buying the car with an eye for your son's safety, but you're concerned that getting everything fixed on it will take time and that will take away some time that you'd rather spend with her. Tell her you will do your best to make it a reliable automobile that both of you can be confident with.
- make the repairs a father/son project. That gives him some skin in the game, teaches him about cars and gives you a chance to bond with him. And extra hands and muscle is always welcome on some of these heavier jobs.
Played correctly, you win.

Probably needs a B+ cable for starters.
You're going to regret this one...every time you go to the ATM machine!

Just went out to jump start the blue bomb and realized that neither battery cable was tightened. Doh! hooked it up and it started up first try. I found the receipt and the battery is two months old. It might be worth more than the car! I drove it around an it runs fine. We'll try to pull codes next week, do a checkup and get a rehab plan for it. I also thought the hood was misaligned because it was sticking up higher on one side. Found out that someone had closed the hood on a shiny new screwdriver. When I removed it, the hood was fine!
