'98 V-70 Driver Door Latch Cable Became Disconnected

Post by Shamiks V70 »

The driver door on my wife's V-70 became inoperable last weekend so we came back from our outing and we both ended up exiting through the front passenger door. I seemed to recall having a problem with this door cable/handle years ago and I replaced the entire setup with a used unit from the local pick and pull. Since I rarely throw things away when it comes to car parts that may be repairable I looked into our storage and there it was, the unit I had removed years ago. Apparently the cable had come off of the end that is in the latch. I don't have a problem to get it to go back in the slot but I can't move it into the position it's supposed to be in when the unit is not in use. Am I wasting my time or is there a way to get this to work? I really don't want to spend $247 on a new unit if I can easily make this work.
The tip of the pencil is where I'm having difficulty moving it from.

Thanks.

Ask @Abscate about this. We did something similar maybe a month ago. It was a pain...

I remember getting the latch end at the door lock to release was tricky, but don’t have the spare to look at right now.

I guess I'd be better off pulling another from a dead sedan or wagon at the boneyard but since I saved this, I figured maybe I should try this. I got the door open but I haven't removed the one that's in there yet. I figured that it would be better to have something ready to go in when I do. I just wonder what the trick is to get that cable end to go back to where it belongs and keep it there.

If it came off something broke. It’s really well twisted and pin/gudgeon into place, it wouldn’t fall out easily.

Get a junkyard one and take pics as you take it out

Now my problem has changed. I went to the pick and pull and got one came back all ready to start on this and........not happening. I watched the video on how to release the lock and was able to do that but the door somehow swung back and partially closed and now it won't open, won't close completely and I'm baffled. I really can't believe it's stuck "in between". Has anyone dealt with this before? Thanks.

The door latch falls by gravity whe the cams are released. R3cently had one where the cams broke and the door was stuck closed. We had to drill to access the cam and pop it open

Try to find a position of the door where there isn't stress on the door latch, then open the handle without moving the door. If that won't work, watch robert's video on opening it... If that doesn't work, I went he-man on mine and drilled and cut until I could manually open it. I wouldn't recommend it...

Push on the door while you gently pull the handle, too.
