2004 S80 2.5T AWD Throttle Body Failure

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

I am having the exact same problem. I have the Bosch ETM on my 04 S80 but I took it off and cleaned it along with the connector- It didn't help.
Did taking the ECM out and cleaning it help? If so I'll buy the tool and remove both modules and spray electrical contact cleaner to see if it helps me. I just dont know what it could be.
Do you have a VIDA?
There are several things that could potentially cause these throttle bodies to act up.
We need to see which specific diagnostic codes your ECU has stored.
Chances are the throttle body has failed. In some cases the issue is the electrical connection/pigtail.
Volvo DOES sell the replacement pigtail Volvo PN 31409380
Don't let some lazy dealer parts counter guy try to tell you they don't.
If you end up replacing the throttle body I highly recommend the Xemodex unit with an updated contactless internal TPS:

I don't think Xemodex was selling this contactless TPS version yet when I replaced mine. I made sort of a ruckus about the whole thing on here back then. I thought the Volvo/Bosch replacement throttle bodies (with a newer PN) had adopted a back-compatible contactless sensor which other OEs who use these style TBs from Bosch have switched to. When I got my new throttle body I took a look under the cover and found a mechanical sweep sensor :( . It would seem Xemodex has at some point indeed determined the contactless sensor is, or with minor modification be made compatible and has sourced the appropriate parts from suppliers to 'put them together' and sell.

 8) That part number 31409380 should be marked with indelible ink on the forehead of every Volvo parts counter guy. So many of them don't want to look up repair kits database.

The cable is 1/10 of the cost of a throttle.

I suffered the same scenario on my wife's 05 S80T with Bosch throttle body. Various throttle-related fault codes, going into limp mode, "Reduced Engine Performance", etc. And I learned a $350 lesson in the process (Purchasing a new throttle after all the cleaning in world wouldn't help.) I should have taken a clue from my Volvo indy mechanic when he said he had NEVER seen a Bosch throttle body got bad. Turned out to be flaky ECM connections. Removal, cleaning, and reinstalling by the indy fixed the problem.

Haynes has a drawing for building an ECM removal/relock tool if you're handy with metal work. Otherwise you can purchase one for around $20-30. Here's a pic if I attached it correctly:

Issues with the throttle body were not uncommon after 2004 (at the bottom of the page)

But the ECM corrosion on contacts was indeed more common and was causing hard to diagnose issues.

You might need to be logged in to see that page. I get error 404.

Customer's 2004 XC70 also had faulty ECM connection. It had communication fault ECM-003 as well as throttle codes. So much heartache after new MAF, throttle etc.

Our 2002 XC70 with Bosch throttle has over 324,000 kms with no hint of a problem........ yet.
