So I picked up a project car and when I drove it home it had a slight thump from the driver side front wheel that gets progressively louder the fast I go. I thought it was the tire or rim because both were in pretty bad shape. I swapped it out for a good rim and tire and still have the same thumping noise. I was thinking it's the hub. Car has over 200,000 on it and was not very well taken care of at all. The front shocks are completely shot and offer no resistance over bumps. I'll be removing the axle on that side this weekend so it would be a good time to swap out the hub of needed. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Eddie,
Do you mean that as you drive, you get a steady thump, thump.....? If so does it increase with speed?
If that is the case, it has to be a rotating part like the axle or hub. Typically the bearings would make more of a rumbling noise. Bad shocks a knocking when going over a bump.
Check the balance weights on the inside of the wheel are not catching on the brake caliper. What wheel diameter has you car got currently? Have you checked if the correct wheel diameter have been fitted for the rotor size and the wheel is not catching the rotor?
Neil.

Yes, the thump increases with speed, so it has something to do with a rotating part. I turn the wheel by hand and don't hear or see anything. There is no obvious rubbing, that's why my first thought was a bad tire. I'll swap out the rim for another one tonight and see what happens. I have the original 16" rims on there. Nothing out of the ordinary like Canistos or Volans.
My experience with bad hubs was a roaring noise that increased with speed and changed tone when the steering wheel was turned (shifting the weight of the car from side to side).
Start with the axle. While it is out check for play in the CV joints. If you can feel play or the boots look dried out, its probably time to replace the axle shaft.
While the axle is out, turn the hub by hand. If it feels loose or anything other than silky smooth while turning it, replace it. On this part I would only use blue box Volvo or FAG ... and replace the four torx bolts that hold the hob to the knuckle. They are single use bolts.
These cars LOVE fresh front end parts!

Thump thump thump.....CV or other driveshaft problem
worr worr worr....wheel bearing. Right bearing gets louder when you turn left and left bearing gets worse when you turn right. 20-30 mph is the perfect speed to check
