06 xc70 vs 09 xc90
06 xc70 vs 09 xc90
I'm considering buying one of these for my wife: 2006 XC70 5cyl turbo or 2009 XC90 3.2. I am partial to the XC90; i hear the 3.2 is kind of dull but reliable (like me) but my wife likes the look of the 70. They both have @100k miles. We would be happy with either but my main concern is durability for the next 100k. Which do you think would be the best bet?

Based on owing a 2001 and 2002 XC70 and a 2004 XC90 I will give you my thoughts.
The XC70 drives smaller and more car like. They are great cars. My daughters preferred the XC70. Reliability is better on the XC70 suspension and tire related. Power appears better on the XC70. Parts for the 2.5T are cheaper and more readily available - more Volvos with the engine equals cheaper replacement parts. Also more articles on how to fix and maintain.
The XC90 drives like a SUV. It is up higher, more body roll, but has a softer ride. The XC90 eats tires, brakes and suspension. It is a good car, but my guess is it will be more to maintain in the end

Based on my 95, 98, 01, 04, and 06 of various Volvo models i can say that the newer the car the harder the DYI seem to be; the repair complexity seems to increase with the newer the car. That said always remember... Happy wife = happy life

SuperHerman is right on the money, especially about cost of ownership. An 07 XC70 has pretty much the exact same parts as an 03-06 XC90 with about 500lb less weight and a much lower center of gravity. I'm biased towards the 5 cylinder so vote the 2.5T over the 3.2 by default.
The XC70 unless you absolutely feel the need to sit higher. At 100k, ask if the XC70 timing belt has been done, this will be a walk-in cost for you if not (due at 120k). Can see https://www.volvotechinfo.com/index.cfm ... terval.pdf for intervals (3.2 does not have a timing belt).
Good luck !
