Electrical short

While driving my 2005 s40 2.4I it stalled and went completely dead. Had to have car towed home. Had battery checked and was told it had internal short. Installed new battery car car would not start and smelled like wires were burning inside car. Any idea on what might be happening? Lots of sparks if I try to connect battery. I have checked all the fuses and they are OK.
