Check engine rough running and no power

Post by Jwgould1 »

After i changed my front cam seal on 2001 v70 and setting timing from scratch my car started and ran great. I put it all back together performed test drive. All was great. After shutting off and then restarting the engine ran rough and check engine light came on. Scanned for codes, p0014 came up exhaust cam over advanced. My question is can I just pull the belt of the exhaust cam pully and realign? Or how can I set it without pulling it all apart again if that is possible?

Lets see, accessory belt, timing belt cover, shift the PS reservoir, coolant bottle can be unplugged and shifted.
Removing the cross brace might be necessary.

looking down you can see the crank mark.
then look at the cam sprocket marks.
If everything looks good I would remove the rear cam sensor covers to make sure the cam shaft slots are lined up.
Its not that bad of a job. Probably don't even need to remove the wheel.
Small vice grips can be used to clamp the belt to the intake sprocket to keep it tensioned whist you adjust the other sprocket.

Umm. It ran perfect for a test drive, then was out of whack and ran rough after stopping/restarting. You need to double check the timing belt tensioner and the VVT hub to cam bolt torque while you're back in there. Don't start/run it again until you determine what moved and why.

I agree, it sounds like something moved. I am dealing with the aftermath from someone doing that, in my case they forgot to tighten the crankshaft nut, and eventually the crank timing gear wore and moved. It was a bear to find. As much of a pain as it is, I would meticulously check everything. Maybe the cam gear wasn't tight enough. Maybe the sprocket on the cam gear. Maybe the tensioner was loose and the belt jumped a tooth somewhere. Especially since you got a CEL for the cam position.

Also, I don't know what you were using for a reference to do the timing, but there are two versions of the procedure floating around, and the first one (out of VIDA before 2014) is confusing about clockwise and counterclockwise and which way to turn the gears. I don't have the link handy, but look for it, and verify that the confusing language didn't get you.

Jwgould-did you preload the cam gears before putting the belt on? Your car has a variable valve timing system that means the cam gears move relative to the cam shaft. It is slightly more complicated than lining up marks like you do on the 1998 and earlier models

Good news is if you didn't do this...

It's almost certainly the fix

It won't cause damage
