1998 Volvo V70 GLT Suddenly Stoped Shifting

Post by Flyer777 »

Ok so this is gonna take a bit...

TLDR: Car stopped shifting on road trip in Dec. Would do the third gear thing, then after a mile or 2 just nothing. Limped it 100 miles and towed it home. 6mos later I start reading here and figure the PNP switch is a good target. Replaced with no effect. No codes (had blinking lights (up arrow and shifter) when I installed the PNP but by time i found my code reader 20mins later, they were gone and haven't come back.

No luck with OBDII reader, check engine code is P0500, but torque only reads it randomly.

No other indicators on the dash...
No idea what to do next. Replace Tranny? Replace random solenoid? Is there a difference? At what level does this become a shop job? Decent tools, but a garage none the less.

Actually, that's a pretty good description. If I can answer any questions or take pictures I will.

P0500 is a communication error message. It can be any of the control units that is sending a faulty signal. It could be a speed sensor or even a TCU issue. In my case it was the ABS module. I have a later 5 speed auto, and was getting no error codes even with my version of Vida. Ended up taking it to the dealer for a diagnostic and they mechanic had the same issue of the TCU error. He carefully removed the TCU and cleaned the contacts with a Wurth branded contact cleaner and a cotton bud or two. He then re-seated it a couple of times and then checked the codes. This at least then gave error messages that could be read, but the TCU ones when deleted never came back.

If you can limp the car to a dealer it may be worth it rather than throw money at random fixes.
