mixing oil types - your thoughts on that

About a year ago I switched my daughters car from dino 5W20 to full synthetic 5W20. Today when cleaning the garage I found 3 of the cheaper oil filters I used to use (basic purolator - recommended for 5000 mile changes) and 2 quarts of dino 5W20. Her car (hyundai sonata) has 165000 miles on it and burns a quart every 3000 miles. I'm thinking of using the dino oil I found for top offs until its gone (won't take long) and using the basic filters with the synthetic. I change the synthetic oil in her car every 6000 miles so I don't feel that the extra 1000 miles is that much of a stretch for the filter especially since I change the synthetic at 6000 mile intervals.

This is kind of a universal car question so it to pertains to a volvo too - otherwise I wouldn't have posted this. Anyhow, I'm going to brace myself for some interesting comments. Oil and oil filter questions always seem to stir everyone up. Actually, I have no real concern about doing what I proposed but I'm interested in hearing other viewpoints.

I have mixed synthetic and Dino before, car did not suffer. I have also used the purolator filter many times.

Yeah. The basic white filters are excellent for what they cost. Now they sell a better grade to go with synthetic oil type change intervals. Since I change at 6000 miles I think the old filters are fine. I only paid about 3.50 each for them so I'm not saving a lot by using them.

You have motivated me to go to my stores and throw out that FRAM PH 2870A filter that has been there since 2009 since I will never put it in my turbo New Beetle...

I put on my last fram about 20 years ago. The purolators are very good filters for the money and a few years ago you could get them at Walmart for about 3.50 so I would buy as many as they had on the shelf since two of my cars used the same filter.

Its a 2009 4 cylinder. I drove it for 5 years and gave it to her. I got the ancient 98 V70 Volvo back in the exchange. I am pretty good mechanically and can usually see problem coming. When my daughter had the Volvo she would see a problem that was developing on the car after she was by the side of the road. I figured we were better off with her driving the newer, still trouble free car.

The Sonata has never given me a minutes trouble and I only paid 17K for it new. Camry's with less equipment that year were 26K and could be had for about 23K. I've gotten good service out of it, but quality in materials is a little lacking - mechanically, though, its been superb.

You can always give it away. I've done that before. You can always find someone down on their luck who would appreciate it. Walmart is a good place to find decrepit cars needing service badly. In the south Waffle House is also a contender. When I sold my Camry I had a store of stuff that I gave to a family driving a beater Camry in the parking lot at Waffle House. They were very appreciative and said it would be put to good use.

I will do that. I think it fits pretty much any Beetle but a lot of people hate on Frams because of an old QC issue they had.

The real issue here is what you are doing with your used oil - and I can get there before my favorite Scot...

I see on the 2009, I have a 2011 Sonata that has also been very reliable but there is
a recall on the motor for possible rod bearing failure. No problem with that year.
Ours is also 4 cyl non-turbo and I can't get over the performance, mileage, etc. it
is amazing. 195 HP for a 2.4 liter 4 cyl.
