Thanks for all the tips guys. Here’s where I’m at.
The seller said it would crank and he couldn’t get it started despite it starting the day before. I got the car for cheap and I don’t feel like the guy was trying to hide something.
My mechanic friend started loosing my trust he said that he took the timing belt off and the camshaft was hard to spin and he also said the motor had no compression.

So I started thinking about the “lawnmower syndrome”... I told him to stop work and the car is being towed to a Volvo shop I trust to get a proper diagnosis.

It’s being towed from Oklahoma to Denver. It should be here by Thursday. We shall see.

Unless this model had a non-interference engine (doubt it but I haven't looked it up) I wouldn't spin the crankshaft or camshaft by hand with the timing belt off - way too much risk of valve/piston damage.

No compression? Unlikely - at least one cylinder should have compression short of the engine glowing before failure or the entire block cracking. Have that Volvo mechanic check/reset the base timing. It could be lawnmower syndrome - but at this point I'd have that base timing checked first.

Many friends mean well, sometimes they don't "do well" unintentionally...

You can spin the crank by hand if you don't go nuts on it. You'd have to be cranking pretty hard to damage anything.

So my car is at the shop and getting a diagnosis as to why the car won't start and to see if it overheated. The guys at the shop were alarmed that my friend had taken the timing belt off to check to see if the engine was functioning.

Yep so it is in need of an engine. Seems like someone tried to start it with the belt off. I found a reasonable deal on an engine and a Volvo guy to put it in.
I'm planning on doing the clutch (if needed) and rear main seal. That's going to be my project for the next few weeks. My Volvo guy is a very busy one man shop. I'll post pictures if I make it over there in between remodel/new construction jobs. I'm an electrician and jobs are crazy right now.

Ha! One of the few professions who can afford a Volvo.

Quote from a local on a 150 amp service..$2000

$150 of SquareD and 4 hours later..and one case of Heiniken to get my electrician to bless it, I'm done.

This was the infamous Federal Pacific box with the breakers that fused...not in a good way

To be fair, I've worked around high voltage since 1980, and I had a wired in master disconnect on the service box

Nice. If only I could get a deal like that in my Volvo.
anyone have any recommendations on what clutch brand I should go with?

Sachs, Volvo something else?

Thanks

Back to work

If the R uses the dual mass flywheel you have to go Volvo - and brace yourself for a bad parts bill. Im not sure if it does or does not.

I have to say, Volvo clutches are one of the strongest Ive encountered on the market - Ive got 200k and 6 teens who learned to drive on it.

Thanks!

my plan is the following
Volvo 850 GLT camshafts
Ported Intake manifold
Volvo 850 GLT throttle body
Bosch “White” injectors
Mitsubishi/Volvo TD04-16T turbo
Custom 3” turbo-back exhaust with Magnaflow muffler
Samco silicone intercooler kit
Custom CBV (Compressor Bypass Valve)

Is there a "need" for the 850r clutch?
