ETM issues

Post by CBayless88 »

Okay so I've had my Volvo for about 7 months now...
The issue I am having is a few days ago, the car went into limp home mode. So I had the gentleman I bought it from take a look at it(since he knows a lot about Volvo and i don't) and the code he got on it was for the TPS. Took the car into a shop to have them diagnose the issue and they let me know that the ETM needs to be replaced and the estimated cost for that is $900...
Now what I want to know is if I buy a rebuilt ETM from eBay for about $100, can I just replace it that way or do I need to have a professional sync it with the ECM...? Please answer in the most simplest way possible so I can understand completely.. Im not a mechanic lol.. Thank you!

I do not know if someone with VIDA can re-adress an ETM. The lore goes that no dealer will do it for you unless you buy the ETM from them.

Remove your ETM and send it to XeMODeX. They'll rebuild yours better than new (as they omit the mylar wiper) and send it back. Reassemble and drive.

I just replaced the ETM on the 2001 V70XC with a used ETM from eBay. The donor car was a 2001 V70 turbo with a date of 2011 on the ETM. Direct replacement with no software issues. Did the same on the 99 S80 NA and the 2000 V70 XC. I just make sure I match the turbo or NA, platform or year and transmission.

There is a YouTube video by SI Rob on how to replace the TPS. There is a kit on the bay for a new TPS kit.

Good morning, I did what Kahl did. It has been in my car for two years, no issues at all. Good luck!

You can have any used or new ETM matched online over the internet by either Yagger or Doublebug (both are forum members). The only issue is that you need a Dice diagnostic tool at a cost of over $100

If you can publish EXACTLY which year/model your car is that would help immensely. The matching of year/transmission/aspiration works pretty well unless you have a 1999 or 2000 V70/S70 NON TURBO.
These models have a huge variety of firmware variation (up to 4 or 5 variations for each year as 1999 had no CVVT and 2000 had CVVT and 5 speed auto). Also being Denso engine management there were multiple revisions of firmware for ETM.
Current cars VW Transporter 2.5TDI, 2010 XC90 D5 R Design
