Lots of work to do

Post by wilslap2 »

Just picked up a new project car, 2001 Volvo S40 1.9T. Interior and exterior are in great shape, but it is throwing quite a few codes. The speedometer is not working, which seems typical of the S40's.

Here's the codes I pulled:

P0700 - Trans Control System
P0722 - Speed Sensor
P0172 - Possible 02 Sensor
P0139 - Possible 02 Sensor

Just seeing if you guys have any recommendations as to where I should start. Replace the trans speed sensor, abs sensor, or the abs module?

Tackle the speed sensor first...it may be what's causing other sensor issues... if 02 sensors don't clear up, check for vacuum hose leaks and make sure your air box filter is clean and sealed up tight... P0700 would be the last think I deal with and I'm thinking if other issues are solved, it will resolve itself. Speedometer not working could be the ABS controller- check it. On older 850's and early 70 models, these could be rebuilt without much issue and was typically the culprit for the speedometer not working.

Alright I'll go ahead and order a new speed sensor. Does anyone know how much dealerships usually cost to pull ABS codes? It'd be nice to see if I can narrow down the speedometer problem with a specific code. I don't think the speed sensor code is necessarily causing the speedo issue, it sounds like replacing the ABS controller on the S40's is common.

Before you start throwing NEW parts at it, is there any chance there is a pick-n-pull relatively close?
Might save you a few bucks.

That's a good idea, we have a few of those around town. I'll give those a shot, probably even cheaper then having the ABS module rebuilt I'd imagine.

Alright, so I got a new ABS module in, and now the speedometer is working. Interestingly enough, it's throwing a new set of codes.

P0717 - Tranny Speed Sensor
P0700 - Transmission
P0101 - MAF Sensor
P0172 - System too Rich

So after I fixed the speedometer with the new ABS module, the car went into limp mode. Kinda sucks when you fix something and it makes things worse haha, but at the moment I am just going to focus on the transmission issues. I might just replace the Output shaft speed sensor as well as the Input turbine sensor because it has given both those codes at one point in time. It also does not shift out of park without pressing the shift lock override down... so that could be related as well. Any suggestions?
