You probably need Volvo to pass CARB, available from FCP. ABOUT $1000-1200 plus core.

I know the US has some weird rules around use of used cats (makes no sense other than to stop steeling them) as they either work or not.
If you are allowed to buy and fit used, you have a huge Volvo and Saab specialist junkyard in vandsautodismantlers in the Sacramento area. They are good to deal with.
Neil.

Unless you have a connection you will have a hard time getting a scrap yard to sell you a cat in the US.
I bought one from a member here, and then dropped my cat the next month.
Good karma..

Thanks for the info guys! So... Would any one these work? Volvo isn't passing smog because apparently the current cat isn't CA legal anymore? & not worth paying $1k+ for a catalytic converter

If the sell it as CA legal then they have hD it ' certified ' by CARB and it should pass.
It would be best to have someone from CA who has used it confirm they have passed smog.
$150 is much nicer that $1200!!

California may be the most strict in the entire USA when it comes to emissions. If it were me, I'd ask around at any local Volvo specialists you can find - odds are they know of a source that is local, will work, and is also compliant.
Any idea what the emissions code is for your vehicle? I can't remember if it is part of the VIN or the build plate by the battery. If I get some time this weekend, I may be able to dig deep for you.

Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

1998 V70 2.4 NA -- ~184k miles

I know right! Definitely not worth paying $1200 for a damn catalytic converter! But I guess Ill have to look into the Bosal converter.
Yea CA sucks.... I mean there is ways around the whole "smog issue" but would like to just pass the legal way. But I don't know the emissions code. Anyone know how to find that out?? Would be much appreciatedwizechatmgr wrote: ↑21 Sep 2017, 04:47 California may be the most strict in the entire USA when it comes to emissions. Did you fail smog on the test or on the visual inspection?
One of the reasons the CA economy has flourished is because you can breathe the air, unlike the 1970s
