Rear left strutbar? seems loose at right side and does clunk.

Post by kaneelschep »

Hi all.

Since a few days, i noticed a clunk sound wich only occures on uneven terrain. I suspected the front strutbar, since the right side rubber is not the greatest. But when i checked with the wheels up, i noticed that i can push the bottom of the left rear wheel inwards.
While doing that one of the two big bars next to the axle goes up on the right side.
I cant really see how it is supposed to be attached there on the right side.
Can anyone tell me what happened and how it should be?

Can you post a picture or pictures of what you want us to help you with? It could be the rear anti-sway bar ( some FWD were not fitted with them but I'd expect a T5 to have one). They can break with age and rust. The mounts either end have bolts that can rust and break. The rear axle frames have bushes either end and they wear out and can clunk too.

Its not the sway bar. And its not the rubbers. Those are clearly visible.
Its one of those two bars wich lead from the wheel hubs to the other side.
I think they are called the transverse arms?
The left one is loose on the right side. And i cant see how its supposed to be connected.

The bushings and delta links go bad after something like 150k miles.

It's a pretty big job but can be done at home on jackstands. The delta links, part 3 , can be very tough , so if they are loose that's great!

Here's a diagram that shows where the right side of the left arm goes, circled in red.

Its loose at 1. Not at 3 ;-)
The whole bar flips upwards with the wheel.
And tomorrow i have to drive 1500km with it.
Been driving it all week though..

That picture is quite small and unclear to really see ;-)
But i just put the car back in the muddy garage and i will stick my head in again.

The round end of the arm is completely loose from the bracket wich apparently holds it onto the side of the other arm.
But since this it is all inside the other arm, you cant really see anything.
Does anyone have a youtube film or picture of the actual parts? So I can get an idea of what to do?
It seems like the only way to fix this, is to take the whole arm of. Fix or replace the bracket back onto it and put it all back together.

Would it be safe to drive with this? I was driving it like this all week. Did almost 800kms..
I have a lot better tools etc to fix this at home.

what i circled at 1 seems to have broken of from the rest. the round part with rubber is still on the arm.
The rest is still bolted to the other arm.

Kaneel, you have no torsion bar on your rear wheel if that part is broken.

Maybe there is a way to attach the. Bar to the car with thick zip ties or hose clamps to at least secure the position? I would use at least 4-5 ties/clamps

I'm not sure what is holding your wheel on the car in this case,

You are going to wear out your tire very quickly if you have that much slop in the wheel, perhaps it is already worn badly.

If you must drive it, keep your speeds down. I would not drive it.
