Hello All,

This might be a difficult one to identify the issue, but I am at a loss.

Over the last couple days
When I first start the car and drive a mile, it seemed as if something was stuck in the suspension and then freed. I found lots of reports of rocks getting stuck between the backer plates, that seemed to be the issue, it took care of itself. I cannot find any indicators fo that now.
Then a couple of times I put the car in reverse and backup a foot, there was a screeching (metal interference) noise. Put the car in park and tried again and no problems
Today, I tried driving in reverse. The first couple of times it was like the brakes were applied and it hit a dead stop. Did not give it a lot of gas. I put it in drive and then tried again no issues. After I drove it a bit, no more problems. I could fly around the block in reverse.

A bit of history on the car. Last month had front struts, outer tie rod, serpetine belt, timing belt, etc at a volvo specialist. Also did a transmission flush a couple of months ago. I have had no issues (do not think it was ever done before) and the car has since never shifted smoother. I was very careful to get the right amount of fluid and check the level regularly.

Any input would be appreciated. I am hesitant to take the car to the expensive repair shop again until I can give them a better idea what the issue might be.

Thanks,
Brian

Parking brakes within the rear disc centre may have become loose or guide pins released. It's a drum brake within the rear disc.

Is parking brake well adjusted?

I don't think it's transmission trouble. Let us know what you find.

If it locks up while you're at speed the support built into the spindle/hub can break off, circled in red.
This happened to a PO on mine and was like this when I bought it. If this happens you won't be able to repair the parking brake without replacing the spindle. The brake cable can get pulled in and chewed up as the whole parking brake assembly effectively breaks free and rotates around the hub. The splash guard gets chewed up as well.

I once drove a car home 10 miles in reverse when it got stuck. I debated which lane to drive in for much too long.

Well I got it apart and found the brake shoe pad to be broken off. Glad I took it apart when I did. Thanks for the help!

The pad material separating from the shoe was a problem with the OE parking brake shoes on 2000s Volvos. I don't know if issues with either the adhesive or the shoe metallurgy were ever corrected and whether replacement shoes from Volvo are likely to do the same thing again. Some were seen to fall apart after just a couple years when the vehicles were still almost new. If it were me I'd be wary of all the euro sourced parking brake shoes and go with a quality domestic aftermarket brand. The Wagner Thermoquiet line looks to be the main option. I've never ever had a problem with their brake pads/shoes/etc.
