Finally got the cover lose enough that I could access the 3 screws that hold the VR on. Easy after that. The tool I mentioned in the original post was the winner.

As far as getting long extensions in there, no wat that would have happened. The intake manifold may be different in na cars. There's no room.

Had no idea what engine you are working on because I use mobile web version and it doesn't show your full handle. Glad you got it out and swapped over.

It's all good. I mentioned that more for future generations reading this and absolutely not to rub that in your face!

So everything is all buttoned up. Somebody with half of a brain would have charged the battery while working on the other stuff. Not so much here, I'll update in the morning!

To dave22r: How many miles were on your alternator?

When my VR went out at 185,000 I didn't think twice about removing the alternator and having it entirely rebuilt.
The rebuild included freewheel, bearings, VR. I think there's a collector ring (in place of brushes) which is also replaced.
Granted, my rebuild shop is nearby.

Glad you got yours sorted.

My alternator started growling at 180k, so I had it rebuilt for $200.

Only problem was, once it was quiet, I could hear my CVVT EXH hub growling. Ive been winging that one for the last 16,000 miles - I think I better pay the piper on that one soon.

That hub of yours is so loud, a lot of space between its parts is indicated. I'd fear for it shattering! Kira

Yeah, I bet the neighbors complained when I left the other day.

I made a deal with Dorian Grey Volvo to defer my 1999 projects until the clutch job was done, so now its parked until I can deal with the hub and exhaust leak.

I think it has 175k on it? Somewhere in that ballpark. The car has been abused and has a questionable background so I'm never surprised when something new breaks. I'm having fun with the car though!

So after the battery charged for a bit, all is good. VR was the issue. Took it around the block it's not on fire yet!
