And time to replace the CV axles.... options?

So the last couple months the S60 has been saying click click click. Usually just turning, but it seems to be getting worse. Time to do some work so I don't get stranded... again!

I'm guessing these are Chinese, made with papier mâché and duct tape.

I have no intention of dropping $900 on some OEM ones.

Is that about the only viable option or is there a rebuild or something that i haven't come across yet?

Is there anything else I'll have to replace while I'm in there?

Advance (go to their website) lists examples labeled Car Quest, Heri, First Equipment Quality and USA industries for my V70.
Many are 100% new parts.

Shouldn't be too difficult a search.

It makes, I believe those from turbo engines won't fit.

Do they look like the dust boots are torn leaking grease? If the boot looks good, you can check the CV joints before removing the axle



You are correct about the chinese/cheap rebuild ones, many complaints about steering vibrations on highway.

Used and recent are hard to find being a non turbo. For a used Volvo one I'd look for ones with thick clamps and with a recent date on the sticker. Keep the clips at the end of the axles from your old ones, sometimes refurbished axles have the wrong size clip.

So the boots are ripped up pretty good. I think the joints are past the point of salvaging. That's why I was curious about rebuilding them. Saving a few $$ isn't the main concern if I can have fun rebuilding.

What's Erie? Never heard of them. Got a few salvage yards in the area but of course that's a crap shoot.

As far as the longevity of the car, not so much. It's my commuter and I'll be replacing it in the next few months, when I move, or if something major breaks.... whatever comes first!

I'm just keeping it alive for now...

Honestly, I got a rebuild from the local AutoZone and had zero issues with it.

It was cheap after the core return, under 100 bucks if I remember correctly. I had zero vibrations or issues from it and it had a lifetime warranty. That said that was only about 8 months before some jerk turned in front of me and totaled the v70. The front axels from the AWD can be removed without draining the tranny so it really wasn't a big job at all. If you have an fwd car you may not have the same cost to work ratio that I did.

I rebuilt mine myself with new CV joints from Skandix in Germany. About $125 each side, complete as I recall with new boots and grease. I would not want to use cheap aftermarket ones, so I was happy to be able to re-use the original Volvo ones. I don't know if anyone in the US sells the CV joints as separate parts though.

Im going to catch holy hell for this but..

I would pull the boots back, inject in grease, wrap them in plastic and tape, and drive it for the few months left and then move on.
