1999 V70XC: Front right (& left) driveshaft replacement impossible to find!

Post by jvl »

Hi all,

In The Netherlands, the P80 V70XC is unfortunately going extinct.
So far, I've never had trouble finding new parts, both OEM and aftermarket.
Now, I'm starting to run into trouble:
After hitting a ditch, my car is shaking at certain speeds and when decellerating.
Local indie says it's probly the front right driveshaft that's banged up.
Ordered a new (non OEM) driveshaft on-line based on my registration number, but that didn't fit.
I suspect that part to be meant for a P2 XC70. Sent it back, and got a refund.

Now, I'm stuck: I can not find a non OEM replacement for my specific car anywhere on-line! Also tried calling a few suppliers, but no good!
My Indie tells me I need part number '8601576'. They can get me an OEM axle but that would cost around €600,- which is a bit too steep for me. The non OEM ones go at about €150,- but I cannot find one that matches the '8601576' part number.

Now my questions are:
  • Does anyone know a good website that ships to The Netherlands?
  • Anyone has experience with ordering a new front right driveshaft for a '99 V70XC (MY2000) with an AW42AWD tranny? Is the part number I mentioned above correct, or do other numbers also fit?
  • Although the left front driveshaft is less urgent, I would like to ask my indie to renew that as well while at it . Indie says I need '8601637' or '8251525-5' for that. Any thoughts?

Thanks so much for any input!

That part number for the LH axle is fairly universal for any turbo FWD and AWD 99 on using the 4 speed auto trans, right upto the 2005 C70. So I would hope the LH axle is easier to find possibly.

RH axle is more challenging as it was only used in the S/V70 AWD in 99-00 using a 4 speed auto transmission.

I am assuming you have looked at a used Volvo axle? The CV boots could be replaced and if needed the support bearing as well if needed.

It can be hard to find axles now as even over here the better rebuilders are not doing them any more. It took a search of North America for me to find a RH axle for my 5 speed auto V70 base. I found one that ended up being damaged in shipping, fortunately only a CV outer boot.

Are there any Volvo used parts specialists in Holland/Germany/UK/Sweden? Here we have a handful of them but even they are getting low on stocks. Out local junkyards used to have several V70XC and AWD models, but not anymore. We have one in currently in a local junkyard but it is a 98.

Not sure how easy it is to get parts from Sweden but here is a place listing at least one:

Prices are E130-155 or so

I also noted that Volvo has changed the part number for this part now. If you check this website and look at the alternate part numbers listed 8601576 is listed as being replaced by 8251520. This could also be a rebuilt/exchange part number v's a new part number.

Hi all,

thanks so much for this link, Neil, I had been googling for both new & used axles within The Netherlands and Belgium for some weeks now but did not find anything.
Just ordered 2 used OEM Driveshafts ('A rated') through the swedish website you recommended, both left and right.
Paid ~370 USD including shipping from Sweden to Netherlands, which I think is not a bad deal. Prices for used Volvo V70 axles within The Netherlands range from ~150 USD up to ~275 USD.
Just hope they arrive in good shape and will actually fit. The guy I have been in contact with was very friendly and checked the part numbers with my VIN number and confirmed these are the ones I need, so hope all goes wel!

So, for any future Matthewsvolvosite members that are in need of new driveshafts, the part numbers above appearantly are what you need!

Great find also on the partnumber-conversion page, Neil, thanks! Will bookmark for future use :-)

Will confirm if all fits well, hopefully soon.

Have a great night,

Joost

Glad to hear the good news. Now I will wait with baited breath (not holding my breath) to hopefully find parts were all good. The only issue i had buying a used one was the shipping company damaged it in transit. Fortunately all it needed was a new CV boot (Lobro).

Hi all,

Well, good news and bad:

BAD: the right hand side axle did not fit. See the picture attached.

Good:
- left axle fits
- with a workaround, my Indy used the 'new' bearings and used them in the axle that was fitted on my car. So, he basically created one new driveshaft from two 'donors'. This works!

I attached two pictures. One shows the differences between the two axles. The one on the left is the axle I received from the reseller, the one on the right is what was fitted on my car.
The other picture shows the numbers that are on the axle that was already fitted to my car. Those are the numbers you need when looking for a new one!

I can now drive the car. The vibrations are much less. They're not entirely gone however. I could best describe them as coming from the firewall. I can feel them in the bottom of my seat, as well as in the steering wheel a little bit. It's less when under heavier load (e.g. gentle accelleration up a hill). The vibration is there at certain speeds, but also when stopped at a traffic light. It seems to vibrate more when the A/C kicks in.

I am now considering two next steps:
- to replace the front CV joint of the propshaft that powers the rear wheels. Not sure about this: to check for vibrations I already had the propshaft removed and drove without for a while, it does quiet down the car a bit but not sure this is the root of my problem.
- to replace the front lower engine mount. Indy says it could do with replacement. Haven't seen it myself. What I did notice is some 'klunking' noise when moving from R to D or D to R. The top engine/transmission mount has already been replaced.
Indy charges about 265 USD for replacing the lower front engine mount. Is this a wise thing to do? Is this a reasonable price? I'm willing to pay some, but only if it really improves the comfort of my car. Will replacing this mount significantly reduce vibrations??

Any experiences on front lower engine mount and/or front CV joint on propshaft, related to vibrations?? THANKS again!

Oh, I forgot:
In tracking down the vibrations, i've already taken the following steps:
- driving without propshaft for a while. This does provide a smoother ride, but the vibration's i'm looking for keep existing without propshaft. Propshaft is now re-fitted.
- top engine/transmission mount was replaced. Reason to do this was 'klunking sound' when shifting between D and R. Sound has reduced but is not gone.
- replaced front right and left driveshafts for used ones (see posts above)
- had wheels balanced
- had alignment done.

So, could this point me towards the front lower engine mount? Or do you have any other suggestions?

Check the lower torque mount. Unfortunately they are no longer available and I haven't even found an aftermarket one. You can but poly-bushes for FWD lower torque mounts and I'm certain they would fit the AWD variant. It will make the shift a little harder.
Usually the smaller rear bush fails. However, not sure it would cause the vibration.

The Mount under the engine crank pulley on the RHS will cause vibration if it fails. Easy to check with a floor jack or a mechanic with a hoist could check it easily. The rubber upper portion will separate from the lower metal part so when the engine is lifted slightly a gap will appear between the 2 parts.
