2008 S60 2.5T - Known transmission problems?

Post by MOZKNBBUHD »

I just checked my transmission fluid after owning this car for a little while and I noticed that it's quite high (on the hot mark when car is stone cold) and it's getting a bit burnt (still red but is turning brown). I'm wondering if this might cause the slight issue that I have at lower speeds in traffic where it feels like there is lash being taken up as I get on and off the throttle. It's only a slight jerk but it feels strange and my previous vehicles never felt like that. Are there any other known issues with the 2008 geartronic transmissions? I know there were all kinds of issues with the 2001-2002 years.

Also to double check, Mobil 3309 is the correct fluid right?

Thanks!

Correct on the fluid but you may need a valvebody.
First change out all the fluid

Check the engine mounts and torque rod underneath the transmission. These cars can get quite uncomfortable in stop and go if they are worn enough.

Was the car level hot and idle with the transmission in P? As above, search about replacing the fluid - is it the geartronic or the 5 speed auto? Careful not to remove the wrong 'drain plug'. Fluid level is not easy to measure properly, just look around about tips on the subject.

I'm sure hoping it's not the valvebody. It's only a slight bump (very slight, you'd have to be paying attention to notice it) when going on or off the throttle in traffic. It feels like the transmission is locking and unlocking the torque converter. My normal solution is just to leave it in second, which seems to help. Winter mode almost entirely eliminates the issue.

Engine mounts look pretty good, I'll look for the torque rod though and get back to you later.

The car had been just sitting for about 2 days when I checked. I didn't realize it needed to be warm and idling to get a proper measurement.

I concur.
I just did a partial drain/fill on my '06 @ 100k miles. Some minor but noticeable inconsistent shift quality 2-3 and 3-4 and an occasional 'ungraceful' upshift while slowing 4-3-2 really settled down. The fluid that came out of mine would be described as 'still red, starting to turn'. My preference is to drive it for a month between drain/fills (various reasons may or may not necessary). I'm going to do another drain/fill sometime before thanksgiving then wait till the spring to do the 3rd one. After that I plan do it once/year or 15,000m

I concur with a Gibbons flush'n'fill and check the dogbone torque mount on the front of the transmission to the subframe. The rubber can completely seperate in that bushing, leading to lash. Replacement is only about $40.

The rubber can pretty much vanish completely if worn enough. Mine only had small traces of rubber left.

Very quick and easy to replace though.

Yeah, I tried to fix once, but then figured out it's $35 and takes ten minutes to replace. Much better now.

Alright, I'll do a drain and fill as soon as I can. Is it better to use the mobil 3309 or the toyota stuff I keep seeing around?
