Hello, I own a 96 850 glt and the problem I am experiencing is not one I have ever experienced with other makes/models of vehicle before.
When it's cold (first thing in the morning) I start driving in first and it stays in first until the RPM range goes to 3000 before it shifts to second, then it does not take long for the transmission to drop in 3rd. When the car warms up, it shifts better or as it should (I think).
I changed the PNP swith (big job) and the transmission fluid. (levels are good).
I doubt I am the only one with this problem...
When I connect to the OBD2 reader, I get code 500??
I changed the speed sensor but the code still comes up?
I dont know if it's related to that or something inside the transmission.
Someone mentioned something about a heat sensor in the tranny that my do this? Any help? anyone. tks

I mentioned about rough shifting and replacing the transmission oil temperature sensor some time ago. My '96 850 GLE had the orange arrow flashing and rough shifiting when the engine oil is still cold. All trouble went away after the VOLVO dealer replaced the oil temperature sensor. Hope this helps!

Is the sensor in the transmission area or engine area? More specifically, do you know the part #? The local volvo shop is not helping out allot...they seem to be at lost with what it could be... tks PaulRick wrote:I mentioned about rough shifting and replacing the transmission oil temperature sensor some time ago. Wow.. I thought I was alone out here... My story is EXACTLY the same... she shifts hard from 1st to 2nd but then after she is warmed up I have no issues... NO one has any ideas on the problem... ANY help or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!! Thanks! Whittney

There are two sensors on the transmission. I think the bottom one is the oil temp sensor. The one on the top is the emgine RPM sensor.

My 94 850 does the same thing and after reading all the material I could find, came up with the bad oil temp sensor diagnosis. Anyone have an idea of the cost to replace it? The manual looks like too much work removing the battery, and air cleaner and draining the transaxle fluid.
