2002 V70 FWD 2.4L - RPM problems

Post by LiThiuMElectro »

Ok guys I am in waayy over my head right now, I spent two weeks searching to problems tried a few things bare with my with the long post.

Bought a 2002 V70 FWD 2.4L 5 about 3 weeks ago, test driven the car on the highway nothing major the owner just had 1200$ on the car changed a bunch of things in the past including ; Gas pump, Power steering line, AC unit, timing belt etc... I had all the recipe car looks to be in good shape.

I noticed in the test drive that the RPM was a bit erratic when the car was not warm would surge a little bit a lot speed but fine on the highway. Fast forward a week after the buy, I drive on the highway 110/120km/h I was going up hill so I push the gas pedal to keep the momentum, so I guess the car would downshift to a lower gear and give more torque. The RPM start https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NsaM9lnzjE acting up. If I release the gas and let the RPM settle its someone ok. If I press the gas pedal all the way down the RPM wont even go up. The RPM was also acting up at idle sometimes, starting at 1500 up down a little then settling down around 900/800RPM

So In the past two week I did my research trying to find a solution reading forums, reddit, website etc... First thing I saw was ETM problems probably dirty, so I bought some throttle cleaning and cleaned the inside of the ETM (before cleaning Image Sorry no after picture). After cleaning the ghost IDLE on park was fine, even if the car after starting would be at 1300/1500 then settling down to 800 on Park after a while.

After a few days the problem was occuring again once a week RPM surge like someone was pushing the back of my car and breaking. Asking for more power was not doing it and pressing down the pedal would not giving me torque. The only "fix" was to either park the car and starting it up again or let the speed go down and slowly build my speed up again. I started reading again, people were talking about MAF problem, so I cleaned the MAF sensor with the proper cleaner, changed my air filter.

Problem was Okish... only had RPM problem once a week. Yesterday I went out of town 30 km away and I had to stop the car 3 times on the side of the highway to get up to speed gain and have the same problem 5 mins later and had to stop the car again. I am not sure is it's that people are calling "Limp mode", So today I started reading again, some people talk about RPM sensor Image located bottom right of the engine on top of the transmission.

I ordered a Contactless ETM sensor to bypass the high cost of having to buy a new one or send my to xenomodex (something like that). Also ordered an OBDII to get the codes out, last week I went for my oil change and had the guy show me all the code, Front right and left ABS sensor, Oxygen sensor, Airbag problems and the rest was normal.

As for now I did not have any message about transmission service, only "Regular maintenance required" message "Break safety failure / anitskid" ( I guess related to ABS sensor or ABS module failing ) check engine is lite up but I would assume it's from the Oxygen sensor.

Thanks for reading, I am up to ALL suggestions (Sorry for the terrible english)

No expert here but that o2 sensor is telling you something. To dig deeper probably requires that Volvo software, vadis.
The obd code reader will only give generic codes.
But I suspect the solution is already staring you in the face with the o2 sensor.
Let's see what others say.

You think that O2 sensor could cause the RPM drop ? I am NO expert in car far from that, I thought that O2 sensor was assuring that combustion was doing alright and not too much emission was getting out the exhaust.

Pull the plugs and have a look at the cylinders and condition of each one. Check the dates on the coils to get a sense of how the car has been maintained.

If yours is a turbo it may have the first generation MM electronic throttle body which Croaks at about 100-120k miles

The symptoms of trouble match yours, but so do vacuum leaks, loose hoses, and splits in sir bellows so that's the first thing to check. You have to remove each hose, mark, and inspect/replace to do this right..."looking ok" isn't good enough.

I have tons of recipe for the maintenance of the car, I know that hey changed some coils and plugs because he had misfire problems on #2. But I think o2 sensor can cause that ? Also its does not have a Turbo, for the ETM It's was never changed, I already ordered a contactless ETM to replace the old system and bypass the ETM problems if it was the problem.

I will have to check on the internet of to check for Cylinders condition and vacuum leaks. I would assume that if the car had a major problem like vacuum leak the guy would not had put 1200$ the week before selling me the car 500$. The reason he did such major repairs on the car, is because he wanted to give it away to his son, because it was the car of his late wife that just passed away. His son decided to buy a Matrix instead and left his father with the car.

A misfire in a cylinder is a spark plug, a coil, a fuel injector, or a valve. The O2 sensor won't cause that.

While you are waiting for your ETM spend the time to look for vacuum leaks, they are common and often contribute to other problems

Yeah I will do that this week-end im getting my OBDII to get some code out and see "most" of the problem, I know it's not a VIDA/DICE but this will suffice for the task, for now.

How many km on it? Try first the trick with the Etm. Then check the transmission fluid - google up for the correct procedure. The 2002 was also known for problematic valve body, at least a fluid change, should be the 3309 Toyota Type IV
