Bought a 2002 V70 FWD 2.4L 5 about 3 weeks ago, test driven the car on the highway nothing major the owner just had 1200$ on the car changed a bunch of things in the past including ; Gas pump, Power steering line, AC unit, timing belt etc... I had all the recipe car looks to be in good shape.
I noticed in the test drive that the RPM was a bit erratic when the car was not warm would surge a little bit a lot speed but fine on the highway. Fast forward a week after the buy, I drive on the highway 110/120km/h I was going up hill so I push the gas pedal to keep the momentum, so I guess the car would downshift to a lower gear and give more torque. The RPM start https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NsaM9lnzjE acting up. If I release the gas and let the RPM settle its someone ok. If I press the gas pedal all the way down the RPM wont even go up. The RPM was also acting up at idle sometimes, starting at 1500 up down a little then settling down around 900/800RPM
So In the past two week I did my research trying to find a solution reading forums, reddit, website etc... First thing I saw was ETM problems probably dirty, so I bought some throttle cleaning and cleaned the inside of the ETM (before cleaning
Sorry no after picture). After cleaning the ghost IDLE on park was fine, even if the car after starting would be at 1300/1500 then settling down to 800 on Park after a while. After a few days the problem was occuring again once a week RPM surge like someone was pushing the back of my car and breaking. Asking for more power was not doing it and pressing down the pedal would not giving me torque. The only "fix" was to either park the car and starting it up again or let the speed go down and slowly build my speed up again. I started reading again, people were talking about MAF problem, so I cleaned the MAF sensor with the proper cleaner, changed my air filter.
Problem was Okish... only had RPM problem once a week. Yesterday I went out of town 30 km away and I had to stop the car 3 times on the side of the highway to get up to speed gain and have the same problem 5 mins later and had to stop the car again. I am not sure is it's that people are calling "Limp mode", So today I started reading again, some people talk about RPM sensor
located bottom right of the engine on top of the transmission.I ordered a Contactless ETM sensor to bypass the high cost of having to buy a new one or send my to xenomodex (something like that). Also ordered an OBDII to get the codes out, last week I went for my oil change and had the guy show me all the code, Front right and left ABS sensor, Oxygen sensor, Airbag problems and the rest was normal.
As for now I did not have any message about transmission service, only "Regular maintenance required" message "Break safety failure / anitskid" ( I guess related to ABS sensor or ABS module failing ) check engine is lite up but I would assume it's from the Oxygen sensor.
Thanks for reading, I am up to ALL suggestions (Sorry for the terrible english)
