Dumb oil change question

Post by BrianV70 »

Hi All -

2000 V70XC 124,000 mi

After watching the IPD video on oil changes for P80 cars with the cartridge filter, I realized I probably did not perfectly seat the filter and O ring*. I can simply re-do another oil change for $40-50-ish bucks - wouldn't hurt to flush this motor a bit more.

Question though if I just take off the filter housing and re=seat the filter and O ring, how much oil is going to come out (without draining the pan)? ...and then top it off.

Or is this just a stupid idea and I should just re-do the oil change?

Thanks!

*previous knucklehead shop that did an oil change did not even use the O ring!

The messy answer: Throw a nice clean pan underneath and find out! Note how much you lose and replace with that same amount.

The clean, logical answer: If your concern is regarding an oil leak, 40 beans is a lot less than an engine. Can you put a price on peace of mind knowing you did critical maintenance correctly?

you will loose about 3/4 of a quart. and it is not necessary to change the oil again. just drain the filter reseat the oring and filter start it up count to 4 and shut it off and check it and top off. ad a drop or two to the o ring to help seat it once it is on the filter. push the filter down all the way you should hear a click like noise as it goes into place.

Clean container.

Drop oil filter housing, catch oil

reseat, reinstall.

Put oil back in

Drive 5-10 miles

Check dipstick and top off if needed.

^^^Don't take advise from this guy, he reuses oil.

Pick up a quart of oil anyway. If it looks clean enough, you should be fine to put it back in. Otherwise, it's better practice to use new oil anyway.
That's like putting coolant back in after draining it. Nasty...
