Don't know much (almost anything) about hockey itself. I hear Bobby Orr was pretty good. Plus, I think there were some good Canadian players. Mostly from places like Ponoka, Lacombe and Rimbey, AL. But hockey players mostly leave old pucks all over my baseball infield. Now I have a use for them (hockey pucks, not hockey players).

This is the SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT point.

Damage to the jack occurs when the vehicle rolls 1-2 inches. This rolling event happens b/c of weight shifting, when that happens, the jack is now slanted ---> collapse.

Also, get the spare tire ready beforehand. The time to swap wheels should be less than 30 sec. In other words, minimize the time the car is without wheel in place.

Since I already highjacked this thread how about this? Am I the only one terrified of ratchet style jack stands? Except for the rust (see image), and maybe this doesn't matter, my 30-year old pin style 3-ton jack stands seem a better bet. I don't trust the safety features designed to prevent ratchets from killing you after impact by an errant tool, falling tree branch, hail storm, malevolent neighbor, etc.. This from a review says it all: "While ratcheting mechanisms are safe, pins are fool proof." How can something so critical to the survival of our species be "safe" if it isn't "fool proof"? Plus, a broad base seems much better than skinny tripods that can pierce hot, soft asphalt or shift on a loose particle surface even though the tripod geometry is inherently stable.

Any recommendations, good experiences with pin style jack stands from this century? Or should I just clean up the rust and live with it?

When you get old and crusty you

Set, block, and jack.

Set jackstands.

Put jack back under, touching, but not loaded.

Put the tires underneath

Have cell phone nearby if working alone.

A flat base will be more unstable on an uneven surface since anything stuck underneath will make the whole thing able to rock back and forth. Three legs have a distinct advantage there. Each leg can have a decent sized platform without adding instability to the whole thing.

I like the idea of pins myself and although the ones I'm using are probably from the 70s or so not much seems to have changed.

More on topic I've used the original jack loads of time and think it works quite well if used properly. I'd never stick as much as a finger underneath the car without a jack stand no matter what jack i was using. Incidentally that's not a issue either since my garage jack is a bit leaky and sinks slowly so you really need to add the stands.
