2000 S70 ECC intermittent delay in position 3, ignition switch failure

Post by PS78 »

Hi everyone. So here is the issue. 2 days ago I noticed that after I started my car the ECC had no lights illuminated and did not function. After about 5 minutes or so lights were lit and all functions (fan speed, air cond. Auto)worked correctly.the next time I drove it I put the ignition to position 2 and it worked as well, but upon starting again the unit had the 5 minute delay again before coming online so to speak in position 3. I did do some reading in the archives and the ignition switch was mentioned in a few articles, but I wanted to know if there are any other potential items to examine in the process? I also want to mention the lights are not blinking at all on the ECC panel and for all intents and purposes the unit is functioning well once it's actually on.
Thanks in advance for any insight.

I'm confused about what position 3 you are asking about. :?: :?:

if you can clarify what position you are describing maybe we can be of help.

Position 3 ignition key turned fully to start and run. The ECC will work in "accessory" then, once the engine is started it goes blank. Updated: I removed the electrical part of the ignition switch earlier, cleaned the contacts and reinstalled it and it's been functioning normally since. Possibly the patina of age on the contacts of the switch?

I've begun to notice similar behavior with both A/C and the radio. After jiggling the keys after starting, both will "wake up". I suspect my ignition switch (never before replaced) is finally showing signs of age.

The mileage was 154k miles when the symptoms appeared. The contacts were tarnished and it did improve with cleaning, but I should have updated my post though. I pulled the ECC and found 2 capacitors on the board had leaked. I needed the air and defrost at the time, and couldn't find replacement caps locally so I replaced the unit with a salvage ECC and all is well. I very well might replace the bad capacitors and test the unit in the near future. If it tests out I'll have an extra ECC to hold onto or be able to regift to someone that might need a working unit. So this topic can be closed. I'll start another thread when I repair the old unit.-Paul
