240 rev problem

Post by mike C »

Hey all, I've been having this problem with my 82 240 wagon. When I start it up, the engine revs up really high. There's nothing I can do to make it go down. When put it in drive, it goes down, but while i'm driving, it will accelerate on its own without me pressing the gas pedal. Also, sometimes it will not respond to me pressing the gas pedal. Anyone know how to fix this?

i used to have this exact problem. it's caused by either the wires going to the idler motor shorting out, or the idler motor itself malfunctioning. check the first before the second cause the idler motor is kinda expensive and is a pain to remove

I had a similar problem with my 81 240 DL wagon. It was the low idle wire. I disconnected the bigger plug and then adjusted idle. I also went into the wire harness for that system and cut the wire and then put the plug back. It contained about 4 wires. SMOG people couldn't tell that way and I passed with it disconnected.
