Hello
I have been having some unfortunate noises coming from the rear of my ‘98 V70XC...(250K miles)...mainly when turning and then accelerating out of the turn. It typically makes a loud Clunk, and happens more on left turns from the right rear, but does occur on the other side once and a while.
Today the roads were snow covered so I thought I’d see if the viscous coupler would engage and test if that was the issue...when the rear wheels engaged a ratcheting sound came from the right rear drive wheel.
Any ideas? I have another coupler I could install...I did check the parking brake shoes if they were hanging up...the noise is not coming from the angle gear and does not occur when turning slowly left or right. One thing that does seem common is when the car is coasting into a turn, then accelerating out of the turn... the loud noise will occur.
....another possibility would be the splines stripped on the rear axel shafts? I'll have to pull this apart to see what the problem(s) are...?
I would appreciate some advice before I have to tear things apart? (I did turn off the TRACS to see if this was an issue...no changes...)
Dan

Are all of the tires matched? Could it be a wheel bearing?

Does it sound similar to a front cv going bad?
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Thanks...wheels are matched and inflated properly... Noise is from the rear not the front angle gear. Prop shaft and center carrier bearing seem OK..

Check the bush at the front of the VC casing has not failed. It will clunk nicely when it goes. Also check the prop-shaft center bearing carrier rubber donut for failure.

Thanks...that would explain a Clunk, but when I purposely allowed the rear wheels to engage by spinning on ice, the ratcheting sound would probably not be the bushing..?

That is why I said check the bearing at the front of the VC case.

Thanks Neil...I read your post as ‘Bush...’...not Bearing...sorry. Temps are in the Negative F here for the last two weeks so I haven’t been able to work on the problem. I have a spare VC and I’ll try swapping that out first.

Good luck with that! Make sure you have a good quality 6mm (? IIRC) Hex Allen type socket, soak the 6 hex bolts on both prop-shaft to VC flange and the VC unit to diff a couple of days prior to trying to remove. Also I use a wobbly stick extension and tap the bolts with the 6mm hex in place to 'shock' the threads prior to removing. Find I round them less that way. Also if they do round I have been successful removing them with a good set of Vice-Grips. Slow but works in at a junkyard!
