Be sure to inspect the Harmonic Balancer (damper), it might be the root cause of the oil pump failure.

However, I have no idea what to check for and how it is supposed to look.
Check the first two as soon as you remove the timing belt. It does not matter now big you are, a human should not be able to wobble the outer ring or the hub on the shaft at all. To a human the whole thing should be rock solid.
Shaft Wobble
Wear and tear between the hub and shaft allows the hub to wobble.
Ring Wobble
Wobble of the outer ring caused by rubber failure Grab the outer ring and try to move it.
Rubber Ring Deterioration
Visible deterioration of the rubber ring between the inner-hub and the outer ring. This rubber ring is subject to severe conditions caused by engine harmonics as well as heat, cold, dirt, chemicals and oil.
Visible cracking or warping of the balancer hub or outer ring.
Leaking front main seal
Oil seal or timing cover wearing into the metal of the harmonic balancer, allowing oil to slip by.
The rubber is the working component. It dampens the harmonics by absorbing rapid changes in kinetic energy.

A trick re crank seal (use Corteco or Volvo OEM only)...
To avoid damage to the new seal during installation...Wrap black electrical tape as shown, this allows the seal to slide over the black electrical tape:

I've done a timing belt replacement. I can make sure it's lined up just like the TB replacement.
This time your be taking the timing sprocket and oil pump out. I would think, the oil pump and timing timing sprocket are keyed so that they can only be installed one way in reference to the crankshaft. But I don't know, never been in there. Keying is what I think I would do if engineering the thing.
If you take care not to lose the crankshaft datum in the disassembly, you can put it back together without the crankshaft alignment pin. If you lose the datum, you will need a crankshaft alignment pin to get find the datum on the crankshaft.
A Volvo Camshaft / Crankshaft Alignment Kit will run about $45.00 on Ebay.

Just to confirm the harmonic balancer and the timing gear are both keyed so you can't install them incorrectly unless you really, really try. I've never pulled an oil pump on a Volvo but the part I've noted is that you crack the pump out using a chisel on the lugs according to Volvo. Yikes.
Pulling the hub, by the way, you are supposed to sink two hex bolts and use a puller on the bolts, not directly on the hub, according to Volvo

Thanks. I had two other threads. Someone already provided the links. One was for the incident. One was for the follow up and this one is for replacing the pump. To summarize, I found hunks of the oil pump in the oil filter blocking two of the four holes on the top of the filter. The pieces look like they are castings and the dimensions indicate they may have come from the crescent inside the oil pump. The pieces are too big to have passed through the sump screen in the oil pan making the oil pump the only possible likely source. There are other loose pieces inside the pump which were too small to pass through to the filter being ground up when the car runs - like a garbage disposal with a spoon in it. I'm starting with the oil pump and will drop the pan next. The oil pump is obviously toast so I'm starting with that.jimmy57 wrote: ↑26 Dec 2017, 16:38 I'm going to be a downer here. Another thing: the crankshaft has a square shouldered seal surface. The seal can easily be damaged sliding over the front of that surface. You can use a sleeve fashioned out of thin plastic as a guide or you can use a paper clip and walk around seal to get the lip over that edge and then drive seal into pump body.
