1998 volvo v70 will not roll backwards in neutral

Hello...just looking for some help for my friend. It is a 1998 v70 Volvo that would not move in drive on the way home from work. pushed the Volvo into the driveway was going to have it towed discovered it would not roll backwards in neutral. when car is running it will shift into gears but wont go. been researching a lot about clutch plates slipping? Anyone have any ideas besides tranny? haha

Some information for clarity please.

98 V70, but auto or manual trans, turbo or non-turbo, FWD or AWD?

This will help us to start trying to figure out what may be the problem.

So for clarity also, the vehicle starts, but when gears are selected nothing happens, and the car can roll forward but not backwards at all?

major clarity here!!!! so sorry!!! It is a S70 not 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive but has a light turbo...
Car came to a stop, when gas pedal is pressed when in gear it will not move however it will roll forward... It physically is binding when you try and push it backwards. Yes the car will start. It's a dual spec Volvo meaning it was US spec AND European spec that was originally picked up at the Volvo factory in Sweden and then sent to the US...

Physical binding suggests delaminated ebrake linings.

Would that also be the cause for it not to move when in gear it just revs but wont go??

Jack the car up and try to spin the rear wheels, you can do one set at a time. Also check to make sure the CV axles are all the way in and not broken.

haven't tried that yet cant do that until after work or maybe not even until tomorrow I will get back to you ASAP!
