Yes, the noise has changed. It's now more like grinding metal. I don't know the purpose of your comment but it's not helpful. I'm focused on fixing my car.RickHaleParker wrote: ↑27 Dec 2017, 09:57 Oh! Its gone from Gatling gun to Garbage disposal ... I hope the best for you 98v70dad, hopefully it's only a problem with the oil pump and not something else.
You've been getting much more than your fair share of bad luck lately :/

On the bright side - you likely won't need another oil pump for another ~20 years... =)
Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

Thanks Teddy. I don't have high hopes but replacing the oil pump is definitely worth a shot, especially since I found a new one for half price on ebay. Lack of oil for a few minutes may have caused some additional damage to the valves or rings, but I found no metal bits (color) in the oil I drained or in the oil filter which I cut apart. Time will tell. I spent the day collecting tools that I'll need.

True, as long as it isn't burning oil like crazy or my compression numbers are OK its no big deal. However, my engineer self tells me that wont be the case. We'll see...its worth a shot.wizechatmgr wrote: ↑28 Dec 2017, 07:32 On the bright side - you likely won't need another oil pump for another ~20 years... =)

So, I've been studying up a bit and have a few questions.cn90 wrote: ↑26 Dec 2017, 09:17 - If you don't want to mess w the starter motor etc., then some people do this trick...
* Leave the TB in place.
* Spray WD40 or PB Blaster on the 30-mm nut.
* Then impact wrench to undo the nut.
* Then undo the TB etc.
- The oil pump itself, there is a youtube video from the UK Volvo diesel engine.
1) Do I have to take the hydraulic tensioner loose? It seems to me that you could pull the TB oil pump gear pulley and tensioner without releasing the tension.
2) Someone here indicated that the TB oil pump gear pulley is indexed and only goes on one way. I guess I'll trust that but confirmation would be nice.
3) I'm confused about what I'll be dealing with. From the pictures I've seen (going out to in) it looks like a) a 30 mm nut b) harmonic balancer held on by a few bolts c) something the harmonic balancer is mounted on - very confused by this one d) TB oil pump gear. Any clarification of any of this would be great and extremely helpful.

It's
30 mm nut
Four M8 holding on harmonic balancer
Timing belt sprocket. Pulls off with puller bearing in threaded bolts , not on sprocket. It is indexed.
4 bolts holding in oil pump body

- Yes, the Timing Belt needs to be removed (after you undo the 30-mm nut with impact).

It’s easy to be a little freaked about the timing belt because of visions of blowing up,your engine.
The tail-less monkies that work on your car at the dealer ( ok, that’s harsh) don’t care about your car as much as you and they don’t mess up. It’s a well designed, high quality part timing belt system. As long as you confirm timing markalignment by hand You will be fine. it’s easy ona 98 with no variable hubs to worry about.
Once you do your first one, you will never pay$500 for someone to do it again.

I have done the timing belt - 2 years ago. I found the alignment mark on the crank very difficult to see. I was very careful not to let anything move so it wasn't an issue. I don't think that will be possible on this job.abscate wrote: ↑29 Dec 2017, 06:14 It’s easy to be a little freaked about the timing belt because of visions of blowing up,your engine.

I'm going to go buy the 30 mm socket I need and will be digging into the removal after it warms up a little. I dont have a seal kit yet so if I can stay on schedule today is just a removal and possible autopsy on the oil pump.
I'm wondering if the oil pump was the source of the mysterious droning that started about three years ago. I've had several threads on it and nobody (including me) was ever able to figure it out.
